Mossberg ATR or a Remmy 710

I'm looking at buying my first hunting rifle befor the deer season arrives. These are the guns I'm looking at. They seem to have similar stats besides the fact that the 710 has a scope on it. As you can tell they both are budget oriented guns which is what I'm looking for. Just wanted some opinions from the people that might have experience with these guns.

PS I just bought a Rem. 870 Mag and am blasting ducks out of the sky daily....new to hunting and loving it.
 
I know of 3 people who had a Rem 710, each fella fired the the rifle and each fella had the bolt come back in his face. Rem fixed each rifle, but would you want to fire it again. I am interested inthe mossberg but have no info on them.
 
My vote goes to the Mossberg ATR. I have not shot one, but I do not like rifle bolts in the face either. Since you are limiting it to these two, I will not spout off about how the stevens 200 is an economy rifle, accurate, without a pretty stock, and well worth the 300 paid for it. (Ooops!)

with that said, I like the look of the ATR and would not feel ashamed having one in my gun locker.

seems like a thorough, possibly biased, detailed opinion. Nonetheless Those who own them will soon tell you what they think..

What Cartridge are you considering?

Thanks for all the replies. This is exactly what I'm looking for. I want my gun to be in a 30-06. Seems to be very common and capable with a wide variety of ammo's availible. Where is the best place to find a stevens 200?

I bought a Mossberg ATR100 in .30/06 to try. I was impressed for the price. I don't think it has much on the Stevens, but doesn't give up either. I'd choose either over the Rem710.
 
Well I guess now I'm looking between the mossy and the stevens. Great review on the stevens. I probably can't go wrong with either. I just need to pick out a scope to finish her off.

I've owned both....the ATR in 30.06..was well balanced,nice trigger,overall fit and finsih was much better that I expected it would be for the price...accuracy was pretty darn good to with Federal premium 165 grains

The Stevens 200 is no slouch either,have it in a 243(well my dad does)...trigger is good enuff for what we do,fit and finish is not too too bad...accuracy is great....

My vote would go to the ATR though,just waiting for the 223 and 243 to hit the shelves..

By the way, the Mossberg ATR100 is the rifle that was the Charter Arms 1000 for a number of years. If you find reviews, it's the same gun. There is a lack of info on the ATR100 still under that name.
 
If you get a stevens in 30-06,7mm mag, 300 mag, then get yourself a better recoil pad as well;)

7-08, 308, and under you should be alright with the recoil pad you have on it.:)

My next rifle is going to be a Savage with the Accutrigger.

Stevens 200 hands down, top it with some not so expensive Weaver bases and rings, a decent glass like a Burris Fullfield II and you'll have a great little rig. Simmons doens't make a bad low price scope either. The rifle is pretty light, so an '06 will need a better recoil pad, the 7-08 won't be so punishing but will treat you well. Wholesale sports in Calgary (hate to recommend them) or Russel's also in Calgary (same outfit).

Now, if you can spend a bit more money, go with an Accutrigger Savage.
