Mossberg ATR or a Remmy 710

I recently sold my Savage 111FCXP3 package gun, it was the hardest kicking 30-06 I've ever fired but it was a well-built gun. The Sav 111's are the same as the Stevens 200's, except for the stock & the pre-mounted scope. I personally think the Savage 111 package is a better deal for the $$$, but the Stevens is available in a wider range of chamberings, so it's a toss.

Alternately, you might consider a single shot NEF handi-rifle. They're $255 NIB from SIR mailorder, which leaves you more $$ to spend on a better scope, and most of the hunting calibers come with integral scope rails so there's no mounts to buy. SIR doesn't list a 30-06 handi rifle, but they do list a 270, which I'd go for instead of 30-06 any day, IMHO. If you want a handi rifle in 30-06 you can get one from Russell's, but they list for $279. Just my 2 cents :D
 
Kick in a few extra and get a Remington 700 SPS. That way down the road you can buy lots of aftermarket goodies for upgrades.

Maybe then it might be as good as a Mossberg or a Savage is out of the box. :p
 
So thats my next question, Mounting scopes. What exactly will be rewuired for me to buy. I have only ever mounted one scope on a 22 and it came with the mounts. I was looking at the savage 111 last night but I thought I may be able to put a nicer scope on the Stevens or Mossy for cheaper. I am leaning towards the mossy right now since I'm getting the impression its no better or worse than the stevens. I will save 30 bucks on the mossy and can put that to a better scope too. The scopes I was looking at are here.

I intend to use this gun for deer more than anything else. Not sure if the 2.5-10x or the 6-24x would be better. Any thoughts?

To start with you aren't going to find a lot of recommendations for trashco scopes.Secondly a scope with an A/O offers no advantage on a big game rifle,and can be a hindrance.Thirdly,a 6x24 would be ridiculous magnification for a big game rifle.Do yourself a favour and find yourself a better quality 3x9 by a different manufacturer.Or if money is really tight,go with a fixed 4x scope.The really cheap variables are not reliable.

may I reccomend a 3-9x40mm power bushnell elite or legend. fairly decent for the coin. I have one on my stevens 7oh8. I have a weaver 3-9x50 on my .22-250

24x seems a little too much for a deer rifle unless you are shooting them from your doorstep and over into england;)

2.5 to 10x would be the limit for me.

A 1.5-6power isnt that bad of an idea either.

As for the crappy stock on the stevens, I have ordered a boydds pepper laminate JRS stock. If you order one dont expect it come in any time soon. I ordered in April and they just told me another four to six weeks:eek: .:mad: :(

I have a Stevens 200 in .30/06, topped with a 3-9x Bushnell Trophy. Very nice rig. I will be adding a Limbsaver though as it is soooo light ;)

What he says...on every point. I highly recommend the Burris Fullfield II 3 x 9. I have so far bought four of them from eBay, the most expensive was $250.00 including delivery. Also check out Mueller Optics if you don't mind spending a just a bit more. There's a fellow in Winnipeg who sells them. Don't go trashy on your scope, the rule of thumb is that you spend more on the scope than you do the rifle. Another thing, gun shops don't as a rule have a trully qualified "gunsmith" on staff. So make sure the scope is carefully and well mounted. Just because a salesman can talk up a storm doesn't mean he can mount a scope. Actually, scope mounting would be an interesting thread.

Good point, come to think of it I've never really been taught how to correctly mount a scope, I'd be very interested in a sticky'd scope mounting how-to. Do it up!
 
Bushnell Legends have not proven reliable in my experience on my .280 semi. I have had 2 fail. They have bright optics, but in my view should be used on lighter kicking rifles or .22's. In my experience, Bushnell Elite 3200 is a much better scope for the dollar, and the Burris fullfield II is brighter still than the elite 3200, with lifetime warranty and excellent durability. Just no rainguard:(

Yeah forget the 710 altogether... go for the 700 SPS if you want to have a Remington on a budget... ;)
 
A lot of gun shops around here refuse to even bring the 710 into their shop. They are that bad. As most have said, stay away from it.

Also like most have said, the Mossy, the Stevens and the Remmy 700 SPS are much better options for not much more money.
