Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone knew about available barrel sizes for the Mossberg 500/Maverick 88. Is there anything shorter than the 18.5" security barrel available? My research so far has not turned up anything and I was curious about it

For the mossberg 500 platform there is 1 option which is called a compact cruiser it is also restricted 500 Compact Cruiser AOW (51697)
Has a 7.5" barrel. Now this is for the 500 series lineup.
For the 590 platform you can get the 590a1 barrel which comes In at 10.25 on the 590A1 Compact Cruiser AOW (51664)
A 14" barrel the class 3 590a1 come with or the barrel kit you can buy on its own for about $450... or get a shockwave barrel that comes in at 14.375. Which you can find used for $250-$350

* to answer your question directly to that gun if you want a NR setup the answer is NO" 18.5 is the limit for that platform. Some sites down south sell 14" aftermarket barrels but I've never seen one I canada...

The big issue with getting a shorter barrel is the magazine tube - due to the way the Mossberg 500/Maverick 88 barrels attach (by screwing into the end of the magazine tube) you need a barrel that has the attachment point at the correct spot. On a normal 5 round magazine tube as seen on most 500s, an 18.5" barrel is only ~3.25" longer than the part that screws into the mag tube. Thus, they could only go down to something like 15.5" while still utilizing the same magazine tube.

Now, I've seen kits for 14" barrels that include a new shorter mag tube, but they're not common and when you find 'em they're not cheap - I want to say the last one I saw was damn near $500, which IMO is totally not worth it to lose a few inches of barrel.

If you REALLY want a short barrel gun, I'd look at buying a turkish pump gun. That way you end up with TWO guns for far less than you'd pay to get a shorter barrel for your 500. Or suck it up and buy a 14" 590, although you might have to go used to get one, they're probably super hard to find in stock these days - and even used you'll be paying 3 times what a turkish gun would cost new.

Thank you for the info, gents.
I think I might just go the 590 route and get the more expensive but shorter model. I heard too many horror stories with the turkish guns to feel comfortable getting one even at the lower pricepoint. Either that or just wait for some new short barrel shotgun to come out.

That g4c price is good, wolverine supplies, firearms outlet are typically 399.99 and the new shipment of these barrels in canada ive seen at 449.99 so if your gonna pull the trigger on the 590a1 barrel I'd do it now .
Or you can buy a complete shockwave 14.375" model they pop up on the ee for $500.
Take the barrel, magtube, foregrip, sell the Receiver for 250 and the grip for $40. Now you only paid $200 basically for your barrel kit. Just a thought..

That says 590a1. I'm not sure it would be compatible with a 500/maverick 88?

You think someone will pay $250 for a receiver? You can get an entire maverick 88 for that price...

It was a option available for a shorter barrel as he said he'd pursue the 590 route...
And yes I've sold multiple receivers for $250 within hours of posting .....
A maverick 88 is a POS cost cutting gun that takes the 500 platform as cheap as it can come and they sell for around $330+ tax now do about $360 all in for a single barrel option...the stock is super thin, the foregrip is the cheap single mold that isn't interchangeable. It has a completely different trigger mechanism and safety design. The 500 has the entire safety setup ontop and that alone goes for $50 let alone the entire receiver. Bolt and carriers $60-$80. Trigger group typically $75-$100. Cartidge stop, interuptor, ejector average $15-$20, shell elevator $20-$25. Let alone the receiver housing typically $60-75. So add that up and if you want to build a new gun and not deal with a stock or a old 28" rib fixed barrel you don't want then Just buy a receiver and go from there . Those priced are ee prices even. Half of those you can't even order as there factory only parts, a bolt and carrier new from a dealer is well over $125 and a trigger group pushes $200......

The 500 and maverick use the same foreend these days. Having owned both, I didn't notice any real difference in stocks either - minor difference in recoil pad and checkering was all I noticed. I am well aware of the differences between the two, the only reason I sold my maverick is I shoot left so the safety was a pain, whereas the 500s tang safety is much more lefty friendly.

I've seen Mavericks on sale for $250 in the year 2021. Full retail is more obviously, but deals can be had.

The big issue I see with buying just a receiver is the price of barrels - even used ones rarely go for anything less than about $180 from what I've seen, so if you're buying a receiver for $250, a barrel for $150 (which would be a pretty good deal from what I've seen) you're sitting at $400 for a mix-master of used parts (and you don't even have a magazine tube yet). Meanwhile, my 500 2-barrel set (28" vent rib, and 18.5" security barrels) was $510 shipped to my door, and was new not used. I'll take your word that receivers sell for that much, but I sure as hell wouldn't pay that.

A receiver with no barrel, no mag tube, no foreend? IMO thats worth $150. I could maybe see $250 WITH the mag tube, but not without it. But hey thats just my opinion, I don't control what others are willing to pay.

Yes it does fit all 500/590. It replace the mag tube and everything to fit.

And yes, i would pay 250 right now for a new receiver/internal parts. I will keep it for custom project and spare parts kit.

New Shockwave shipped to my door is $556 -250 = your barrel kit cost $300 instead of 400 and you get other parts to sell like trigger group/stock grip

If anyone wanting a shockwave barrel and mag tube for cheap, write me pm i can arrange something
