Wife has a Maverick, which has performed flawlessly. She wishes to be able to hunt deer in a m/l season but doesn't like smoke poles, and can use shotgun in that season.

We tried a box of Federal 3" rifled slugs; quite frankly both the accuracy and drop left something to be desired. This was the first and only time either of us has had anything to do with slugs, so maybe we're expecting too much?

I'm thinking maybe we should get her either a Mossberg 500 or 535 combo gun, and looking around online I see you can get a turkey/deer combo, OR a deer/regular shotgun combo, is my understanding correct?
If so, we could get her the turkey/deer combo and just keep her maverick for upland/waterfowl. Alternately, sell the mav and go with the deer/reg. combo.
Thoughts and advice?
Thanks.

Don't expect long range. I would not shoot beyond 75 yards with store bought rifled slugs.

I cast lyman 525 gr slugs for my rifled barrel and by handloading I am comfortable shooting to about 150. But I prefer to keep it under 100.

Others will disagree but I think shotgun slugs are for close range only.

the 535 is the only best bet .i have had mine now for several years and never a problem . i have shot lots of deer and turkeys as well as ducks and rabbits very good combo for the money DUTCH
