Mossberg hard to pump

I have a mossberg 500 3 barrel combo. While shooting slugs thru the rifled barrel it pumps very smooth and easily. But while shooting trap with the 28" vent rib it is very hard to pump after I've shot. I've even had to smack in on the ass end to get it to pump back a couple times. If I haven't shot the forend slides fine with either barrel.

Anyone have any ideas on what would cause this?

start with a good polish of the chamber on the 28 inch barrel ,look for any rough spots or burs that could hang up the shell after it has been fired ,,if it is only doing it with one of the barrels that would be the place to start ,,,Dutch

I am shooting the cheap winchester but I have a buddy who has a 500 as well and his fires the same ammo no problem.

And for the rifled barrel working but the 28 inch not working. I was firing winchester slugs, not sure if that's why it was loosening up better.

I'll try polishing. I just took the whole gun apart and noticesd there's a lot of wear spots on the elevator, bolt, bolt slide, cartridge stop and interrupter. They all have spots down to bare metal. Should I polish those spots as well?

it aint the ammo.
Look at the locking lug.

The bolt locks into a square hole in the barrel at the top of the EJ port. That lug must fit tight on the sides when forced to the rear.

On one barrel its clear but on the long barrel its tight.

You're going to need to sand something once you figure out where its tight.

Try fitting the bolt lug to the barrel with the gun apart so you can see how it fits. Look for evidence of wear on the side wall of the square hole in the barrel.

Change ammo and do the polishing of the chamber before you do anything to the locking lug and the barrel recess .

I agree with rembolt...change ammo and try it. I have a Winchester 1300 that will do the same thing with the cheap Winchester value pack ammo. The "brass" is so thin on those hulls they will swell in the chamber. I've even seen the ejector tear a piece out of them and leave the rest in the barrel. Had to use a rod to drive it out. I won't fire those shells in any of my scatterguns anymore. The federal field and range 100 packs are around the same price and a much better round.

If it's new just keep working it in

I've already put a whole flat through it. Still stiff. Mossberg told me to contact their Canadian warranty center. It's only about an hour and a half away from me. Ill call on Monday and if they need me to bring it in I can always drive it out there at the end of the week and see what they say.
