Hi,

Does anyone know what the "Marine-Kote" finish is on the Mossbergs? My buddy, who has one, says he thinks it's some kind of phosphate coating, not nickel plating like on the Remington MM.
His Mossy is about 5 years old and well used, and the finish shows no wear, seems pretty durable.

Also, my friend's gun is the 18" bbl model and it is drilled and tapped for optics. The one S.I.R. has is the 20" model, is it also D&T?

Thanks,

Steve

I had a 500 Mariner that I bought in the early 90s and it was a nickle-teflon type of finish, it remionds me of the finish on the Remington 870 Marine Magnums. It was very durable!
My brother's 590 was apparently nickle plated and peeled off when a buddy accidently soaked it with gasoline and other chemicals on a field trip.

I bought a 20" 590 Mariner (item # 440167) from S.I.R. last winter. The receiver is drilled and tapped for optics. The finish looks like its kinda thin at first glance, but I find it to be very durable except for a few flakes inside the receiver, and wear marks on the magazine which is normal. Don't know what process produces that finish, though.

I certainly don't regret buying it.

Thanks for the help.
I'm still trying to choose between the Mossberg and a Remington Marine.
It may take awhile. :)
Try to heft both guns, there is a big difference in feel. The Mossberg has a really thick wrist at the buttstock and also I found I could never hold onto the synthetic forestock due to its design.

Also consider what you are going to use it for, whether adaptability and aftermarket accessoiries are planned etc. extra barrels, IPSC etc. Both are good guns although I think the 870 is a more durable long lasting gun. I won't say choose one over the other (although I changed from Mossberg to Rem).
Cheers
