Hello, has anyone had any experiences with the model 88 Mossberg? I'm thinking about getting one. Any input would be much appreciated! Thanks!

best bang for the buck. I've had mine for a couple of years and woud'nt trade it. Never had any problems with it. damn thing is built like a tank. Just one thing to make sure before buying one, check to see if it as one or two pump slide, mine as two. I heard some people having issues with the one slide version. So hope this will help you.

I had one and sold it. Good gun. I hated the "cross bolt" trigger guard safety so I went and bought a Mossy 500.

About a year ago I bought the Maverick 88 combo set up, came with a 18 1/2" barrel and a 28" with a modified choke tube that can be swaped with any other of Mossbergs accu choke tubes, of coarse later on if ya want you can swap the barrel with any one of the other Mossberg 500 barrels.
So far I'm love'in mine, like gaudzy said up above, the thing is like a tank, the one only thing that I want to change one of these days is the recoil pad to something a bit more comfy.

You could try the ATI setup like the one shown on mine.

The Maverick 88 is cheap enough and built well enough for most shotgun fun. Never had a jam or any other issues and you can feel guilt free to modify them.

I didn't think that the Maverick 88 was ever supplied with only one pump slide as guadzy mentioned since all that I've ever seen have 2. I have heard of some shotguns that only have one and are not all that good. So I guess it would be a good idea to check this before you buy.

Mine started out as a 88 18 1/2" security pump with a pistol grip, but was basically only good for shooting from the hip and a little too brutal on the hands with 3" slugs.

The early 88's only had one bar - I bought mine in 1994, and it only had one bar. I can't remember when they switched to the 2 bar setup, but it was a big improvement.

Target,
where did you get that heat dissipate(sp) set up?
Is it comes with the gun when you bought it?

I had one with only one action bar. It worked fine, I never had a problem with it. If I had a double action bar model to compare it with one after the other it is possible that I would notice smoother feeding with too action bars. Howver, it fed well enough that I never noticed anything I didn't like about how it fed.

Well I went out and bought that maverick 88 yesterday and fired off a few rounds. It is quite the gem! Can you interchange slugs with shots as long as the gauge and length of the shell are correct?

do you have to use a rfiled slug or ??????
I have one on the way, Mav 88 security...was curious as well

Since it's not a rifled barrel, the slugs will be rifled slugs.

P.S. The Mav 88 security will be a pistol grip, so you will get to experience the sting in you hand after about 6 to 8 rounds.

Hey that looks good!
Ya I'm gonna have to do something now, inspired by geologist's thread I took the crazy 88 to the range with me thread early this after noon just see how I'd do. I did two five shot groups as fast as I could, not sure what the times were on both groups but the first group was close to 10" then after a quick reload I managed to bring it down to 5", buuuuut after I got half way through the second set I was more than ready put the maverick away cuz my shoulder was just about toast, guess ten slugs shot in under a minute will do that to ya:rolleyes:

the one I have coming, has a standard synthetic stock on...no pistol grip

That's interesting, since I thought that a "security" 88 was the 18 1/2" barrel with the pistol grip. I may stand corrected if they sell them as a 18 1/2" with a standard stock as well.

There is never an end to what you can learn.

Ive got 2 of the 88's. One is a single arm and the other is a double arm. Extermely reliable, easy disassembly in the field and well built. The accessories and add-ons are affordable. I bought the second gun with the intention of turning it into a muzzle loader.
