Mossberg MVP 5.56 Pros/Cons

I have the MVP Patrol, and love it. Bolt is not as smooth as some other bolt guns but it is still 100% functional and not that bad really. Very accurate gun with my reloads and with factory .223 so far. MAg removal latch could be exteneded some but it's fine when you get used to it. I really like it and encourage you to try one out!

Just got a Mossberg MVP Patrol litterally 2 days ago...

Sloppiest bolt I’ve ever seen, but that is normal on a Mossberg. I don’t know why but they are all like that.

Trigger is A-MA-ZING!!!

Rifle is super well balanced with the 16 inch barrel and it’s got nice fixed sights.

It’s a really nice shtf style rifle overall. Can’t talk about accuracy yet but all the reviews say it’s good.

I would just get a Ruger Gunsite Scout with the 16" barrel off the EE. Might be a couple hundred more, but its a waaaay nicer rifle IMO.

That being said, I still think the MVP Patrol has a place as a truck gun/beater. It also takes multiple types of magazines which the ruger does not.

I have a MVP Patrol which is my first and only bolt gun. I was surprised by how sloppy the bolt is, but it cycles perfectly with all of my ACS LAR, MFT LAR or Magpul mags. It has decent balance, feels rugged and durable, decent iron sights, and a very good trigger. I've only shot it at 50 yards using the irons, but installed a Bushnell 1-6.5 FFP and a friend was hitting 8 inch steel plates at 300 yards and was happy with it too.

I have nothing to compare it too, but I like it.

I have an MVP varmint 24”. It’s awesome that it takes AR mags if you’re an AR guy. Cycles just fine but I would agree not the smoothest action. Trigger is absolutely awesome, stock is very nice too. You can’t go wrong with the price and I picked one up for a good price on the EE. I’m very happy with my purchase. Oh ya it’s very accurate too

No problems with accuracy but like everyone else has said the bolt is a bit sloppy. Used it last summer on some gophers and it worked very well. The AR mags are a big plus.

Own a .223 MVP I picked up used for a good price. Shoots accurate, trigger is nice but yes the bolt is as sloppy as it gets. The mags fit loosely as well but it cycles just fine. Depends on what you want. I own mostly Tikkas and the difference is night and day. I keep the MVP around for friends and family to use. Just a cheap rifle that works well. Id never buy one new though.

I have a Mossberg MVP 5.56 and haven't had a moments worth of trouble with it at all. I shoot .223 and 5.56 threw it, usual group at 50 yds 1.5". Mind you I am a paraplegic and shoot from my wheelchair with no bench rest.

Have the 5.56 patrol model as stated before bolt suck but I like everything else. I've owned the ruger American compact model as well and prefer the mossberg. Better trigger, has open sights and takes ar mags. I'd keep an eye out on EE.

Guys I’ve just got back from the range to try my MVP Patrol and the accuracy was complete ####. I mean like 6 inch groups. And I say group, but they weren’t really groups. I’ve already seen aome big groups that are evenly distributed, but this time it was always unevenly distributed. Something isn’t right but I can’t find what it is.

I’ve put a really good scope on it: Vortex Diamondback first focal plane 4-16x. I could litteraly see the bullet holes at 100yd. I was shooting from the bench with front and rear bags. When I saw the horrible results I shot my m&p15 and my x95 with the same bullets but each equipped with only a red dot sight and my groups ranged between 2-3 inches, so the problem wasn’t me lol.

I only had one brand of ammo, federal american eagle .223 55gr. That’s all I ever shoot I buy it in 1000 rounds bulk.

When I came back home I checked the rail screws to see if they were loose but they weren’t. I re torqued them anyway. Did the same for the action screws but they weren’t loose either. Also tried to slide a 20 buck between the barrel and the stock without any problem. Looks like there’s plenty of room there so I doubt that would be the problem...

I don’t know what else to look for?

I will try to go back to the range tomorrow with a few other brand of ammo to see if my rifle is just picky, but I hope that it’s not the case. I’ve bought that rifle as a beater/truck gun/shtf gun because it used the same ammo as my other rifles. If I have to buy another brand of ammo just for it then I don’t have any use for it anymore...

your scope rings weren't loose? Scope base (rail mounted to the receiver) is tight?

with groups that bad, I would suspect something is wrong with my equipment (usually loose scope mounts).

One of my fav's. Goto for groundhogs. Put in a MDT stock and never had an issue. (Some mags seemed loose in the laminate stock, a foam strip, like for door drafts, fixed any issues.) Only complaint is that it's a soft hitting pin. Doesn't like hard primers. A few times it didn't like my brass & copper 1995 surplus. Just saved them for the MR1 or AR.
