Hey yall

just want to ask a few questions regarding the bolt action rifle [Mossberg MVP Patriot in .308] I purchased not too long ago:

1)
a - what type of Ammo do you recommend ?
b - what type of Ammo in general can I put through this beast ? [is 7.62x39 = .308]

2)
a) I live in the Core of Toronto - is there any gun range that is open for practice not far away [I have a car obv].

3)
a) what is a good optic for a beginner shooter?
b) should I purchase a range finder [and if I should what is a mid tier model someone recommends?]

thanks for reading
thanks if anyone can help in advanced ... sad to see how our gov destroyed and is continuing to destroy our lives ... hopefully they dont over play their already corrupt hand and try mandate vaccines, sadly seems to be the next stage of this BS ...

I suggest you simple google gun club near toronto, and pick the one that is closest or most convenient to you. You can go east to Gagnon, North to Target Sports, West to Burlington rod and gun. There are probably half a dozen other options within 1.5 hr driving distance, but most of them are full.

If you can get connected with a club, members there will be happy to take a look at your rifle and give you some guidance on ammunition compatibility with your firearm, and advise on optics, etc.

7.62× 39 is not compatible! It's a much shorter cartridge than 308/ 7.62× 51. The 7.62×39 will chamber in your rifle BUT ,it is to short !! Don't do it !! If you stand one cartridge beside the other you will see a big difference. Projectile ( 30 caliber are similar the cartridge case do not hold the same amount of powder

For starters, buy the cheapest 308Win or 7.62x51 you can find.

You don't need a range finder.

You do need a cleaning rod. (and patches and solvent)

A 3x9 scope would suit that rifle.

Next spring you can join the Ontario Rifle Associations and we will have a series of shoots and practice sessions that you would enjoy.

As Ganderite said, get the cheapest ammo you can find for now, and a 3-9x40mm would do well. Range finder really not that necessary but nice to have. Also grab a few of the 308 AR10 pistol mags. They hold 10 rounds and are compatible with the MVP. Less reloading.

Also note that just because it's a ten-round mag doesn't mean you have to stuff it every time. Each round gets a bit harder to add as the spring is pushed down to its limit. Sometimes just throwing five or eight into each mag is a lot quicker and easier than manfully forcing in that tenth round.

Op...if you're just planning on plinking and using irons an MVP in .223 would be a good choice (cost per round vs .308).
However, if you plan on mounting an optic you should consider a Ruger American Ranch. I recently picked one up in .223 for mid-range plinking (50-300yrds) and mounted a 1x-4 Bushnell. Since my AR15 mags and .223 ammo started collecting dust...the 16"bbl RAR fit the bill. Target sells 10rnd MFT mags for $20 and Tenda always has .223 at a decent price. eg. Barnaul 223 62GR BOX OF 20 <$9/box
Here's a pic of mine. Patiently waiting for a Glades Armoury bolt handle.....

Thanks for the response !

I just realized after the fact that i made a mistake and I appreciate the correction.

I guess .308 / 7.62x51 is the appropriate caliber for the MVP mossberg .308

thank you for the info much appreciated it ! I made a mistake initially and conflated the .308 mossberg MVP i have with the classic AK platform which If im correct is 7.62 x 39

thanks for helping with the knowledge !!

that looks amazing ... can you get a suppressor in ONTARIO ?
also as my OP pointed out I have the .308 version of the rifle ... im guessing it has further reach and ballistic force ?

Looks like the MVP series are sold out everywhere. All models. Who imports Mossbergs, to see when they’re coming in next?

I just got a 223 from Dante last week.I have the 308 and find it uncomfortable with a scope. 223 feels fine. Also significant felt weight difference too. Wish I could stick an afg on it without dropping hundreds more on an mdt chassis
