Both are GREAT guns...I personally like the Mossbergs a bit better.

I have had both. I currently have a Mossberg 590A1, I am very pleased. I much prefer the tang saftey to the cross bolt on the 870. I always found the cross bolt saftey behind the trigger guard to be awkward. I have had a winchester 1300 for years and it has the cross bolt infront of the trigger guard, so maybe Im just used to that?

Honestly i love both the 870 and the 590. They are both amazing shotguns. I was faced with this exact same decision not to long ago. I ended up purchasing a Mossberg 590A1 SPX and i couldn't be more happy with it. Every time i shoot it i have a smile from ear to ear
