Mossberg Parts Interchangeability?

My dad has an old Lakefield Mossberg 400G 12 gauge that he bought a lifetime ago and over time due to the lack of birds in his area had cut the barrel down and put a pistol grip on it for easy carry/wildlife protection when out on the homestead.

He is now interested in going snow goose hunting this spring with me but can seem to find 16 gauge steel shot anywhere to run in his sxs so he would like to either pick up a barrel/stock for his old Mossberg or buy a new shotgun.

What model Mossberg parts can I look for to run on his Lakefield Mossberg 400G? Are they 100% interchangeable?

Thanks for the help!

I think he would be well ahead if he purchased another shotgun. With the price of pumps like the Maverick 88, it wouldnt make economical sense to buy a barrel and stock for the gun he has. Lots of options come up on the EE. Also, lots of good reviews on some of the Turkish pumps and semi’s that are very economical options

Just some food for thought

Yes I've already thought about going that route but his storage is pretty much maxed out so if I could find him another barrel/stock that is used that might be a better route at this point.

You can check the EE, but you'll find it will cost about the same as a new gun.

A Maverick 88 can be had for $250+tax on sale, $299 regular price. A barrel will run you $200+, and a stock another $40 or $50. I have a Maverick 88, and I've wanted a second barrel for ages but the price is so close to a new gun that I might as well just buy another gun... You can sometimes find barrels as cheap as about $180, but they're usually rifled or turkey barrels with rifle sights, neither of which you want...

If space is such an issue, buy an 88 or 500, take the stock and barrel off the old gun and sell the receiver for a few bucks. You'll get a brand new receiver/barrel/stock, plus still be able to return the gun to the configuration its currently in down the road if he wants it that way.

For only $20 more than the price of a new mossberg/maverick 28" replacement barrel he could have a new 88. Personally if going that route id build the bird gun off the lakefield reciever with the tang safety and metal trigger group, swap the cut down the barrel onto the 88 for his walkabout critter gun.

The more and more it makes more sense especially if a bloody new barrel is $269... wtf. Are the maverick parts interchangeable for sure?

Maverick 88 and Mossberg 500 barrels are interchangeable. Im pretty sure the lakefield mossbergs are just Canadian made versions of the Mossberg 500

I once purchased a Maverick 88 two barrel combo that was almost new off the EE for $275. I immediately listed the uneeded 28” barrel with 3 chokes for $175 on the EE and it sold within a couple days. I eventually sold the rest of the gun when it was no longer needed and came out ahead in the whole ordeal

The only parts that are not interchangeable between the two guns would be the trigger groups. This changes where the safety is located (tang vs on the trigger guard) The other things that are different would be:

1) Maverick doesn't come drilled/tapped for a rail. 500s do.

2) The way the handguards are assembled are a bit different. With older 500s you have the action bars attached to a piece that the foreend goes onto, while the Maverick has the action bars connected right to the handguard as one piece. Replacement parts are available for either style, and you can use either style with either receiver. I have heard new 500s use the Maverick 88 style of one-piece foreend, but I cannot confirm that.
