Mossberg PATRIOT Disaster

I bought one of these on sale several years ago for $300 from a sponsor, I think it was in 7mm Rem if I remember correctly.
When it arrived, gave it a look over, couldn't find one positive thing about the rifle, everything was sloppy from the bolt design, stock design , the mags, trigger was terrible, ceracote finish was even botched up, sold it without even considering putting a round through it lol.
Didn't need a bore scope to figure out what a smashed up pile of #### those rifles are, could have been a $300 tack driver (100% not likely), possibly the only rifle I've ever bought new and sold without shooting it even once lol.

A savage 10 in 223 I owned years ago looked like railroad tracks were running down the bore. Bolt sucked, and ejection sucked but man she could shoot. Heres a target sticker from off the 100 yard bench, average I would say it would hold .75 moa with my driving. Only paid 550ish for it new. Even the ugly girls are a good fck sometimes. Had m70s,77s,700s that could keep up but never had one shoot sub .5s fairly regularly. Used to shoot cans of ravioli and smear some on targets and shoot flies, with a brake you could watch the splatters

Have seen some of the MVPs shoot very well, in 223. Same with the Savages.

Perhaps they have rough bores and are harder to clean, but it can take a LOT of shooting to get to the point where you see accuracy drop off...
 
When I bought my Sauer 100 in 6.5 Swede I wasn’t very impressed with bore when I ran the bore scope through either. No machining marks because it is hammer forged but had a few rough patches where the rifling was missing all together, almost looked like corrosion. Yet the rifle shoots quite well. Bought another one in 7mm, the bore looked much better than the 6.5 but that rifle wouldn’t group with crap.
 
My mindset states, "you can't make a silk purse from a sows ear". I could not fathom throwing money out the window on junk. I wish that people quit purchasing these junk rifles, it only sends a message to the manufactures to make more. The old Remington 788 has much more quality than todays junk.
 
It could also be a matter of a company just sticking to one product line. It's like my old Samsung phones - superb phones (at least the ones I got) and I made the mistake of thinking they make good phones so I started buying their appliances. What a mistake that was. Replaced multiple appliances multiple times due to...electronics issues of all things.

I had a Mossberg 590 and it ran great Had a Maverick 88 years ago and no issues. Maybe Mossberg should just stick to its bread and butter shotgun line. No one will mistake a Mossberg for a Beretta or Benelli, but the shotguns seem to be OK.

I have owned a number of Savages over the year. I knew even the Axis II Precision wasn't truly a precision rifle. Lipstick on a pig adage.

That said, I am thankful I did not take a Patriot in trade last year - a fellow offered to throw in his Patriot in lieu of extra cash. I am glad I took the cash.
 
Okay, so I don’t get it….
358 posts so you’ve been around the site more than once.
You know how to post pictures so you know computers and by extension probably know how to navigate the internet where this brand of rifle and its quality is not a secret, and lots of similar prices alternate offerings that have a lot of positive feedback.
So what in the world were you thinking?
Hope is eternal?
My only defence would be shopping online while drunk…
Been there, done that…guilty as charged (mind you, not for a gun…Amazon just makes it too easy…).

There are lots of great budget rifles available today and it’s no secret Mossberg isn’t one of them.
I washed my hands of anything to do with them when they had pressed in bolt heads fall off their first offering….glad I hadn’t bought one.
Also, now what do you do with it?
Even if it shoots you know the imperfections are there and won’t be happy with it.
Sell it and you either have to give it away with full disclosure or look like a D bag…
If nothing else you reinforced my already poor opinion of Mossberg’s so I’ll thank you for that.

Some people buy cheap rifles because they can't afford or can't justify spending more. If it means more people can afford to own guns, I'm all for it personally.

I'm not about to go buy ANOTHER Savage Axis, but I am in a different financial position than I was back then, and I'm very much happy I was able to buy one for a very good price when I first got into hunting.

I think another poster said it well that it wasn't necessarily purely a price point proposition, but even amongst budget rifles, there are decent ones to be had.

I certainly can relate. I don't have deep pockets and buy what I can afford, tempering expectations that there will be a quality sacrifice along the way. That said even amongst cheap items some are better than others. I know this will not be a popular opinion, but I personally think the Savage Mark II is better value than the price point suggests. I got my Mark IIG for very little almost 20 years ago. It has been a reliable shooter, providing more than decent groups and with the exception of the annoying 10-round magazine fit/tolerance issues in the magwell (causing occasional feed issues unless I hold the magazine at a certain angle while shooting), I would buy another one. Similarly last year I bought two Savage rifles - an Axis II .308 for plinking (bolt throw is rough compared to my Franchi Momentum, but I wasn't expecting much else) and an A22 (which I had to send in for warranty after only a couple of shots after it came out of the new factory box - turns out it was a defective bolt).

Defects can and do happen. I got a Tikka T3x TACT A1 a couple of years ago and it came with a faulty muzzle brake. Tikka (via Stoeger) replaced it on warranty. Things happen and even quality manufacturers have boo boos. Price also doesn't necessarily mean quality - I have an European "luxury" car (it's old) , but that thing has been a money pit beyond belief - should have gotten a plain Jane Camry.

Some manufacturers or some lines seem to have more systemic issues. Or some manufacturers get into product lines for which they don't have a lot of experience. I personally would have no problem buying another Mossberg shotgun, based on experience. But if they made anything else, I'll wait to see how it fares on the market for a few years before deciding whether to jump in.
