mossberg question

I have a pre 96 mossberg 500AR. What does AR mean? Also I want to purchase a fully rifled barrel (ported and intergrated scope mount) for the gun, will I have to look for a pre 96 or will a modern one from any store fit?

Model 500 AR

According to the Mossberg Book : More Gun for the Money,
500AR would be a 12 ga.super grade,vent-rib barrel.The first letter behind the 500 is for the gauge,a for 12 ga.,B for 16 ga. and C for 20 ga.

The new barrels will fit on any mossberg model 400 or 500. I have a new one on my 1980 mossberg 400G. If you ever need more info email Vic Havlin at havlinsales.com. He and his wife cheryl wrote the "More Gun for the Money" book.
