mossberg rifles

4x4 has been discontinued for a few years now, they are OK but near the bottom of the budget rifle category. Stocks are margarine container quality, metal is usually pretty well finished, mags are all lightweight plastic and pretty cheaply made. I have one in marine cote in 7mm, haven't even shot it yet, was under $300 new from Dante, so yeah, they are pretty cheap.

the newer mossberg rifles any good? might be getting a 4x4 model in 270 wsm

My wife has owned two 4x4 rifles, one in .30-06 and the other in .270. Both rifles were VERY accurate, capable of routinely printing sub moa 5 shot groups at 100 metres off the bench (shooting Federal Power-Shok ammunition).

That being said, both rifles suffered structural failure within 4 years of purchase (cracked stock in the .270, sheared bolt head assembly pin in the .30-06). What’s more, we couldn’t get any response from Mossberg when we reached out to them about these failures. I’m not sure if their customer service is still that poor, but needless to say it dissuaded us from ever purchasing another Mossberg product.

I used to own a Mossberg ATR100 in 243win. It had a blind mag that was absolute garbage, but otherwise the rifle was fine. It shot well, stock was one of the better budget entry stocks I've had (Savage Axis stock is really floppy in the wrist area but that can be fixed with epoxying the trigger guard, Rem 783 stock felt chunky in the hand.)

I think I paid $219+tax on it. I only sold it because I switched to left handed, and the guy I sold it to told me its his GF's favorite rifle.

I say, assuming you get it cheap, there isn't much to lose.

Hirsch's experiences are not exactly confidence inspiring though.

Mosberg rifles are unrivaled junk. They’re pricey for their abysmal quality, and there are many vastly superior options. The Remington 783 (if you can still get one) is infinitely better.

I just bought a new Zastava Commercial Mauser; more money than a Mossburg, but amazing quality and finish. Amazing adjustable trigger, and the control feed is typical "Mauser", beautiful. Wood to metal fit could be a bit better, but the bluing is currently the best of the best. There are a few dealers that have them, I got mine from SFRC.
