I have a Moss 500A with a 24 inch smooth bore and would like to drop a scope on it. My question is: can I get a saddle mount for it or is it a tap job.

Get it drilled and tapped and mount a Weaver style base and a set of Burris Zee rings. You will be far more satisfied with this setup than you will be with a saddle mount.
Drill & tap would be the way to go. I put a saddle mount on my Win.1200 and it was the worst for holding any zero unless the target was barrel length away!
