Mossberg Tactical 22 Non Restricted?

As listed in the Cabelas Canada Fall catalogue. Is there any rhyme or reason to the RCMP classification system? I'm not complaining but if this thing doesn't look like an "AR variant" than I don't know what does. This one is non-restricted but the S&W M&P 22 is? If anyone can figure it out let me know :rolleyes: TC
 
Nothing to do with it being non restricted, but I did get to see one rupture a cartridge case at our local range. Apparently the bolt wasn't fully closed when the round went off. It made quite the bang, and blew rounds out of the magazine when it let go. One of the guys also mentioned something about the bullet being lodged in the bore, but I didn't look down the bore myself.
 
I'm on the crackberry so I can't facepalm.

Did you just imply that a cheap plastic .22 built on a 702 plinkster action that just looks somewhat like an AR should be a variant?

From some of the reviews I have read, and videos I have seen. Alot are having troubles like this with the Remington 555 bulk ammo.

I have a box of this ammo myself and as I go through it I see some shells like dangerously defective and some that are supposed to be hollow points, are not.

I have a friend who used this same ammo for his 8 year old daughters bolt action plinker and she had a shell "blow up" on her, Thankfully she was wearing eye protection

I've put over 3000rds through mine without incident and I've pounded most of those rounds as fast as I could pull the trigger.
The Mossy Tactical is a Mossberg 702 plinkster receiver in a poly clamshell type cover.
Looks mean ( to a Liberal ) but it's all non restricted .
Look it up ( dissassembly/reassembly ) on Youtube and you'll see .

597 VTR is a 597

All are non-restricted.

As much as I disagree with M&P 15 22 clasification it does bear the same name as it's .223 big brother and was built with the same dimensions and ergonomics. It functions almost like the real deal with a .22 kit. I don't know the actual reasons for the classification and I definatly would not try refit it for a ceterfire but apparently the CFC thinks we might.

I don't know what ammunition he was using, but the case that ruptured was silver in color,so I doubt that it was Remington.

From one JJ to another, I do agree that the Mossberg Tactical is no where near the gun as the M&P 15 or other .22 Tactical's But it is however, Non restricted and affordable and that is why a lot of suppliers can NOT keep it in stock.

I have been waiting 3 months for mine and finally get to pick it up Saturday and I am quite excited to get it :) From what I have seen it is a fun gun to shoot. I dont have an RPAL and I cant afford some of the more costly tactical .22 But I still want to have some fun at the range with what I got.

I wasn't impressed with Win. 555/333 ammo because of the FTF's .
Win Dynapoints however , worked very well.
Even Remington Thunderbolts worked better that the 555's which was quite surprising...

I have shot one. They are lot's of fun, especially for the price. Just don't expect much for accuracy even with a scope. The whole top rail is part of the plastic clamshell. But rapid fire watermelon destruction is a treat. My local dealer just got 6 of them in a few weeks ago and were unboxing them when I went to pick up a pistol. I would have bought one just for the S#!$s and giggles come hunting season if I wasn't saving up for somthing else. One of the old timers I hunt with would probably have a heart attack at first sight. Believe me it was hard to walk away from it. Honestly it is the only tacticool .22 I would ever spend money on. IMO they (tacticool .22s) are all just for the looks; may as well get the best priced one.;) (flame suit is still on from before)

LOL I am taking mine up north when I go moose hunting just to see the look on my uncles face. I told him I picked up a real "special" rifle for the moose hunt...

I think most of the sales for this gun are driven by that WOW factor you just described and what I was thinking. I told the guy at the shop that he may as well just leave the case behind the counter instead of putting the others upstairs. I bet thay sold them all in a week.:D

What I could not unserstand in my first post, and could not describe very eloquently on a tiny phone keyboard is why the OP thought a Mossberg 702 in drag could be considered an AR variant. They even state on thier website it's a 702.:confused:

This is a common mistake that the anti's make but we should know better and also by the sounds of it, it's the only reason why the M&P 15-22 is restricted. I looked into it more and there is no way it should be considered an AR variant either. It's a full plastic upper and lower with a blowback semi auto action similar to the 10-22.:confused:

If the OP intended to just express confusion over why one is but the other isn't. I just don't know either, it's just restricted for now unless the court case for a solid definition of a variant goes well. (fingers crossed)

I bought one last week and have been very impressed with it.

The accuracy was surprising. At 50 meters with iron sights it was grouping 2" all day from the off hand position.

I actually bought it to teach the kids on..........it is nice and light, cheap to shoot, and Non restricted.

For the price it is a pretty good deal.......

Slapped some KAC rail covers I had kicking around on it, a KAC side sling mount, and rigged up a flash suppressor for it....... ;)

The ergonomics, functional placement of the bolt catch, magazine release, charging handle movement, the overall sizing and dimensions - all these factors mimic the exact handling of an AR platform, like you said. All these factors are the same parameters that have contributed in the Restricted status of this 22. The M&P is a direct training platform where the others are just 'tacticool' plinksters piggy-backing on the allure of the AR's.
