Okay, maybe I'm using the wrong search terms but I can't seem to find feedback....
My two sons (9 & 12) really want dad to get a tactical looking .22.
I've looked around and the pricing runs from $300 for the Mossbergs to $500+ for the Umarex and S&W.
It's just going to be a fun gun...paper plates and pop cans at 50yds.
They both have nice scoped Marlins as their main guns...we're just looking for some fun.
Any feedback on the Mossberg (specifically any problem areas) would be appreciated.

Once you are in the "Rimfire" forum on the right hand side of the screen there is a "Search This Forum" button. Type in "Mossberg" and you will find quite a few threads and most likely the infomation you are looking for. Works much better than the main search function.

For what your sons are looking for it is a competent little rife. Light weight, tacticool looks and actually pretty accurate. 25 round mags can be a little finicky and tearing it down for cleaning is a little more involved due to the body shell. Ive had one since the original carry top came out with no issues.

Even with the stock collapsed the length of the rifle itself is challenging for small kids.

My 12yr old nephew had to shoot mine benched as his arms are just not long enough.

Let them handle the rifle at a store and you can go from there.

thanks factionrr

You're right...I had used the main seach which seemed to bring up nada.
Using the one you mentioned I have an evenings reading ahead of me.
Thanks!

I've owned both versions. For 50yds and under, it simply is an awesome gun. It looks like an ar, has 25 rounds and is non-restricted. For your boys, please don't buy the 22 ar's that are twice as expensive.
Save your money! If you want a real cheap 22. Buy a 10/22. If you want a cool looking 22 that is very light, the mossy is unbeatable. Please buy the flat top version though. If your boys wanted to shoot longer than 50yds, I'd go with a CZ or Savage!

After reading a lot of stuff last night, I'll be picking up a flattop Mossberg in the next week or so.
Airwolf...the boys already have a Marlin XT-22 w/scope (each...I spoil them rotten). Both of them are capable of 2-3" groups at 100m...I'm one proud dad!
The Mossberg is going to be strictly a 'fun gun'...so I'm pleased that it gets pretty good reviews...I really didn't want to spend $500+.
And to think all this started after we watched 'A Christmas Story' a few years back...that Red Ryder we purchased in 2007 sure has sparked a great hobby.
Thanks all for the replies.

My 11 yr. old shoots his regularly and he's average size and he loves his.

We ran 350 rds. through it this past Sunday never had a single FTF or FTE. Even when firing the 25 rd mags. as fast as you could pull the trigger.

I say that's good. My Marlin 60SS will also do that but only has 14 shots.

I've gone overkill, have an hd7 by lucid, cost was as much as the gun but if you've seen it, it has 4 different reticals, auto brightening and very cheap 2x optical. Great little RDS.

Well, went to P&D yesterday to let them have a look at the Mossbergs
They both like the one with the carry handle best...so that's what we bought...decided, what the heck, we may as well spring for it now.
Put 160 rounds through it this morning and couldn't be happier.
Shooting 3-4" groups offhand at 50m, which is good enough.
They both have scoped Marlins (and I have a tricked Savage 93FVSS) for when is we want to 'seriously' shoot...this is strictly for fun.

Congrats, please, please do your boys a favor and buy about 5 or 6 boxes of 50 rounds of different ammo.
I tested over 10 and for my gun it liked the expensive stingers and target grade and even dynapoint.
Dynapoint grouped the best for value but jammed the worst. I've round American Eagle groups well and jams only once in 500 rounds or so. I had over 7500 rounds though my carryhandle until I sold it.
It's a great little plinking gun!!!

I love mine. I've got a little issue that's just popped up, and I'll be making a separate thread about it.

Last few times I've taken it out, the bolt handle will engage in the open position after every third or 4th round. I never had an issue until I stripped and cleaned it.

Anybody else had/seen this? Any suggestions?

feeding problems.

the 'iron sight' (plastic sight) has to be set so high in order to hit anything that you can no longer see through the top optical rail as you're supposed to be able to.

This is the model with the handle. Stay away.

I had bought a savage cub for my son and the length of pull was too long. The Mossberg Tactical was fine for him. Extended it was fine for me as well. The issues that I have are the front sight seem to be poorly index on the two models that I had seen. Accuracy is so so about 2 inches at 25 yards. Also the mag release is difficult for a youngster to manipulate.

It functions fine. My son really enjoys shooting it.

If you switch to a rds and try alot of different ammo you can get 1" groups at 50yds. American eagle works for mine but doesnt group as well as dynapoint, however it jams the worst! Anything longer than that, I switch to my bolt action.

My thoughts exactly airwolf.
I bought this thing for fun...for 'serious' shooting I go to my 93FVSS (now getting 1MOA at 100m.

I'm looking into getting one of these but am wondering on one thing.

Do aftermarket stocks fit on this rifle?
I know it is not a real buffer tube, but will the "tube" on the Mossy accept a new stock?

A followup after my first two range outings.
The Mossberg takes some heat for having a lot of misfires and such...mostly blamed on the inexpensive construction.
It may be true if applying it to the mags.
The first day at the range (a week ago) we put about 160 rounds through it with 5 or 6 FTF or FTE. Not real pleased, but figured it's a cheap gun and it's meant for fun only.
This week picked up a second mag and headed to the range.
200 rounds through the new mag and not a single failure.
Gave up on the original mag after 2 failures in the first 10 shots.
I'll take the mag back for an exchange tomorrow.
Am now totally happy with the purchase...with a good mag it functions flawlessly and was easily keeping all shots in a 3" circle offhand at 50m, with the A2 sights.
