Im looking at getting a new rifle and i have found 2 that are in my price range, the new mossberg 4x4 and the savage 111fcxp3. I was wondering what my fellow gun nuts thought was the better of the two,or if there are any others you would suggest. My price range is around 450-550.

Thanks C

The Savage is probably the better of the two.I just don"t like the accutriggers
if thats the one that has it.Call me traditional,I like a plain clean trigger.:)

Savage would be my choice. I have 2 ...no disappointments. My wife has the 4X4 laminated stock in 7mm rem mag. Must admit the stock has a real nice feel to it. Her rifle is as accurate as any out there.

that Savage 111fcxp3 combo does not come with the Accutrigger and the scope/base/rings it comes with are crap. your choice of chamberings is limited as well.

the 111fcxp3 is basically a Stevens 200 with a detachable mag. just buy a Stevens in the caliber you want, and put the $110 you saved towards a better scope and rings. it will end up being a bit more expensive this way, but you will have to replace the scope and rings that come with the 111fcxp3 combo anyway.

if you are on a budget a Stevens in the caliber of your choice is $300 - add ~$200 for a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40mm scope, $20 for steel Burris XTB or Warne weaver bases, $30 for Burris Zee rings and you have an inexpensive but sound setup and wont have to worry about a POS scope failing.

I do not own a Sav FCXP3, but have shot 3 different ones , 2 are 7mm REm MAg and one is a 300 Win mag. The two 7mm both shot 1 in groups with factory ammo and reloads and the 300 Win shot a 5/8 group using Premium ammo, and was shooting 1 in groups with reloads .All groups were shot using the "cheap crappy" scopes that they came with. The 300 had over 60 rounds thru it before I shot it with the Prem ammo and the scope was still takin the recoil. The scopes are good enuff if you are a box or two of ammo type shooter every yr, but will def need to be replaced if you are gonna do a lot of shooting with them !!

i almost ordered one of these myself a while back, theres still a thread in the optics forum asking about the Simmons scopes on these. at the time i also checked the customer feedback at half a dozen online optics retailers for that particular model of scope. there are enough reports of scope failures with the Simmons Eight-Point scopes to be seriously worried about their reliability.

sure, itll probably last a few boxes of ammo on the rifle. but do you want to take that risk? why not get something thats not a ticking time bomb that can potentially make you miss/wound your game or ruin your hunting trip. getting a cheap scope on a magnum of all things is just asking for trouble.
the cheap aluminum weaver rings on it also got piss poor reviews.

its worth spending the extra $100 to get a decent scope right off the bat, because you will inevitably be replacing the Simmons scope and rings that come with the combo.

111fcxp3 in 300WM :)

got one 2 huning seasons ago, I love it :D

put a Bushnell 3200 Elite on it and use it to shoot Moose :)

Been using reloads, 200grn Nosler Accubonds, shto last falls moose at 300m, mests in the freazer, Whats not to like :)

standard savage trigger is fine, not hard to adjust.

I'd suggest taking a look at some of the used rifles in the exchange. Also consider some of the Mausers on tradeexcanada.com, they are a good deal and you'd have some money left for buying a better scope than you'd get with the savage package.

a friend of mine did just that - hed been used his fathers .30-06 for nearly 20 years, and one day his old man just took it back and sold it :runaway:
so he was looking for an inexpensive replacement moose gun; i told him he should just buy a Stevens. his brother talked him into buying a sporterized Enfield for $300 and now hes complaining about 6-7" groups at 100 yards.

you simply cant go wrong with a Stevens. you know the action is safe, no gunsmithing or headspace issues, everything is new, great support from Savage (theyll ship you replacement parts via rushed courier in 2-3 days), and its pretty much guaranteed to be very accurate.

there are some good deals on the EE but the odds that youll find something better on the EE for $300 are very low, especially for someone new to guns.

FFS there are Stevens selling for $400 on the EE right now  :runaway:

I seen a Savage 110 with a 2-7 or 3-9 X32 Bushnell trophy at gagnons used this morning for 349.99 with sling. I basically talked the first guy through the door into buying it:) (I was there buying rings and hopefully brass for the 222, but no luck on it). For that price, I was thinking of dropping for a project rifle. Good thing he was serious making his pocket a bit lighter otherwise it would have been an expensive day. Older 110 with a wood stock... Nice for the price. My money would go towards a savage/stevens hands down. Have had a few, still is one in the locker :)

The Savage is certainly a very good rifle for the money. The Mossberg is probably a very good rifle for the money. The Savage is the safer choice when you think about possible re-sale value and maybe eventually upgrading or modifying. But your primary concern should be with how the rifle will work for you now in the role you intend for it. Ideally, get your hands on an example of each and the one that fits you better is probably the one you'll shoot best.

But also, if you don't mind spending under your $450-550 budget, manbearpig is right about the Stevens 200.

the Stevens suggestion was so he could squeeze a Stevens, Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40mm scope and decent quality steel rings and weaver bases into his $550 budget, as opposed to the aluminum rings/bases and Simmons 8-Point scope that comes with the Savage package deal.

im definitely recommending the Savage over the Mossberg simply because you know you will get a good deal with the Savage and the jury is still out on the Mossbergs.

i just got back from the gun store and they didn't have the mossberg but they did have the savage, i like the feel of the savage but just looking at the scope you can tell it wont last.but while i was there they had a used savage that had about 2 boxes thouht it and the simmons scope had been replaced with a 3x9x40 leupold rifleman. there asking $599.00 for it.i just cant make up my mind.
