I am looking a new utility/do-all shotgun and like the feel of the Mossberg 500, and hear excellent things about the 930 for its price.

What I don't like are the ported barrels - I have not shot one but I can't see how the porting wont substantially increase muzzle blast?

On the range and waterfowling I wear ear protection but the issue is when I am not, like upland hunting, and also the comfort/safety of my hunting partners.

SO....those of you who have an used/use a Mossberg with the newer ported barrels, how bad is the noice increase?

Thanks

I used the ported slug barrel last year for deer season, and I really didn't notice anything different. No one said anything, so I never even thought about it, until I bought the 930 and it comes with the 26 inch ported waterfowl barrel.

I don't see it making a big difference. The ports are directed mostly up not to the sides.

Porting does nothing usefull on a Shotgun. Unless you like your Shotguns louder than they need be.

Not true. Target loads yes no difference that one can see. Heavy mag loads totally different story. The heavier the load the more reduction in barrel movement you will notice.Especially on my 10ga.

My wife and I both have a 930 with ported barrels. No one we have ever shot with has complained about too much noise from them. The ported barrel would not stop me from buying the gun (obviously it hasn't)!! But to each their own.

The porting is pointed upwards. Remember, all that noise would otherwise go out the muzzle, but also at 90º to the barrel. Since a portion is being bled off earlier and redirected UPwards, there may be an argument made that it is quieter than a normal barrel.

But I wear full ear protection for target shooting, and a plug in my left ear when hunting.

I don't think I would want to sit beside someone in a Duck Blind shooting a ported 10ga. I'll bet your a lonely Hunter. :)

No unually have a blind full but yes after the 1st ralley they always make me go to the far right side for both the noise and so I don't take them out with empty 10ga hulls flying.A couple of the full ported screw ins I have are real loud.:)

Guns are loud, porting makes them louder but directs the noise away and may make the gun more controllable. If you really need the slight theoretical benefit badly switch to a 20 gauge, I wouldn't let porting stop me from buying a gun though.

porting will direct the blast toward anyone beside you so if you are hunting in a box blind your buddy will get pummeled. I friend of mine who does a lot of guiding has experienced fairly serious hearing loss due to ported barrels and chokes.

I don't understand your post.
"porting makes them louder but directs the noise away and may make the gun more controllable." How can it be louder but at the same time direct the noise away? Is porting Magical? And how does porting make the Gun more controllable?
I have owned 3 ported Guns and all I found they did was make the Gun louder and harder to clean.
And if they are not cleaned properly your shooting partner will be blowing chunks off his shooting glasses.
