Mossbery 590A1 Blackwater or Remington 870 Police?

Todays Remingtons are garbage compared to those of old. The QA with Remington sucks. Their guns are ####. I have only had one that worked well, with all types of ammo, and that was a Wilson Combat Border Patrol Shotgun.

Even the cheapest mossberg, will work better then a Remington. I see posts all the time about problems with remington shotguns, hell there is one up now about a Marine Magnum.

Although it may be correct saying they aren't what they used to be, I know many shotgunners with new 870s that have no issues with them. For example, I would hardly call my 870 crap based on it's performance so far. While I do prefer the Mossberg shotguns more than the Remington, they have also been known to put out lemons from time to time (just like any other company). While I respect your opinion, I am convinced that, on average, the 870 is a solid shotgun, even today.

that hasnt been my experience. id take a mossy any day over a modern day 870.

Interesting that no one mentioned that the Mossberg is easier to load and unload because the shell lifter is up against the block carrier when the action is closed.

I don't find it easier to load personally, and I only unload my shotguns out the business end:dancingbanana:

The biggest difference are the layouts of the controls. As noted the lifter is also out of the way for the mossberg when loading and the ejector is easier to service with basic tools.
With the Mossberg I notice an increased length of pull on the trigger finger.
If you want to run a Pistolgrip buttstock the 870 is a better layout and conversely for a traditional stock the Mossberg layout makes more sense.

Generally, problems with guns tends to multiply over the internet, making it seem like the problem is imminent in every single one of them. All mass produced guns produce lemons here and there. But if I listened to the internet talk about my guns...

-My American-made Sigs would've fallen apart from apparent lack of QC
-My later model Glock would have had erratic ejection and been unreliable
-My 870s would have rough chambers and need polishing plus they'd rust when you looked at them wrong
-My Winchester with the rebounding hammer would fail to fire
-My Mossberg would have a misaligned front sight

I know that people have problems with guns here and there, especially when the gun company has to sacrifice final finishing stages on their entry models to keep the cost competitive, but the internet seems to go from "I have a problem with my X" to, "I read that guys are having problems with their X"

internet has nothing to do
with my opinion. ive had 5 870s. two police models of which one was the 870pmax. ive had a marine magnum and àn old wingmaster. last was the wilson combat border patrol. all the guns werè finicky with ammo and had ejection issues except the old wingmaster and the border patrol. ive owned double the amount of mossys and they eat everything ya feed em.

You've owned five 870s, including some higher end ones, and most have had problems?

I've only owned 3 (well one is unfired), including a $400 express, and the only problem I had on the Express is rust on the receiver in one spot because I didn't oil it. Mossberg wins in that department because their receivers cannot rust. My 870 Police has been flawless, and it's just a regular model.
My Mossberg 590A1 has functioned flawlessly too, except it did have a problem with the barrel detent ball coming out after not being peened over properly from the factory. A 2 minute trip to the 'smith fixed that.

Both guns have their share of problems that come up, they're inexpensive guns, especially in their most basic forms.
After owning both and running them HARD, I can't say one is better than the other in function or reliability.

Mossbergs have a bad reputation for out of spec cartridge interrupters and breaking plastic parts on the safety and trigger guard. Remingtons can apparently have rough chambers.

But both guns likely work flawlessly through most of their working career.

One thing I don't get though, is why my 870P flings hulls so much further than my Mossberg.

You dont have to say it. I will. Mossberg 590a1 is better then a 870P. For out of box function and durability without having to be fked with, the 590a1 cant be beat.

The same has been said about Mossberg. I saw one crap out after 20 rounds turned out to be a big bur on the bolt assembly.

I prefer the 590 to the 870. The 870's riveted ejector, and staked in shell stops means that a gunsmith has be involved in simple parts replacement, should there be breakage or wear.

^^THIS! I had an ejector problem on an 870-clone... put me off 870's for a bit.

Also worth mentioning... steel receiver (870) vs aluminum (590 - which I prefer for weight/feel.)

I can hardly wait for my Black Aces Tactical :D

No one mentions that the 870 has unlimited options for after market accessories, spare parts, shorter barrels from different makers (take that moss berg! ) , 590a1's are awesome but the sheer versatility of an 870 police or police marine beats it overall

Oh, and guys mentioned the increased capacity of the moss berg ? Just put a 20 inch threaded barrel on your 870 with a plus 3 and you're at the same capacity with the choke option!

I have owned the 870P and requal with them yearly for work. even though I am right handed I never liked where the safety is. I sold the 870 and bought a Blackwater 590A1.
It's a Mall Ninja approved shotgun. The XS sights are awsome. 9 shot. You dont need to mod anything on it. with the the speed feed stock you can carry 12 rounds of 2 3/4.
Its a bit heavy fully loaded. and it might be a bit long to overall with a bayonet but its a beast none the less. The weigh will help with recoil.

Had a few 870 Express models, bougth a 590A1 Blackwater and sold my last Remy. If I were to do it again tho I would have passed on the Blackwater model and just bought a regular 590A1 since I have removed the railed thumb smashing foreend.

It actually holds 13 rounds (9+4) although shells would pop out of my Speedfeed stock. I ended up replacing all the furniture.
When I see Blackwater, I think of the independent tactical mercenary/bodyguard company over in Iraq more than the cliché mall ninja label. I think that's the link mossberg was trying to tap into.
