Mosseberg 500 safety

I just got a used mosseberg 500 in brand new condition, possibly unfired on a trade. What can I do about its very stiff safety? It takes 2 hands to put the stuborn bastard back on safe.

Push down on it and then slide it. On mine there is a little bit of a spring to the button.

while you're sitting watching tv, put the safety on and off, on and off, for a coupl eof hours. That should loosen er up a little

If the OP has a basic 5oo then h hjas the plastic push button like the rem 87o style. And not the top safety

No he should have a safety on top unless its a maverick 88.

unscrew the hold down screw 2 complete revolution's.
If that work's put a drop of locktite/paint/nailpolish on the head and be done with it.
Working it for awhile at first does help, but if doesn't work do as above.

If this proves to be a major issue, remove the retaining screw, be careful no to loose the detent ball, and cut a single coil from the spring. Then reassemble and see if there is any improvement. Over sized safeties are available for the 500/590s, and one of these might provide you with a bit more leverage.

Mine was stiff when I first got it too. I played with it constantly while surfing the internet or watching tv. It got much easier to manipulate with time.

(you may want to get your minds out of the gutter now...)

Its true its a little stiff at first over time it loosens up.
