Most accurate 22 semi-auto

Marlin 60/795 also has a threaded on barrel, last shot hold open, and shoots ragged one hole groups at 50m.... receiver is alloy though, but they cost 50-75% less than the T/C. Well within his budget.

That's one I am looking closely at. Can someone explain the different between the 60, then 795 and the papoose?

I have an older Marlin 60 with wood stock and blued barrel... don't think it has seen more than 50 rounds.... 2 15 shot mags, a 7 shot mag and bushnell scope and hard case... may be willing to sell or trade it.... I am a couple of hours east of you...

60 has a tube mag, 795 is exactly the same except has a detachable mag. There are more variations of the 60 than there are of the 795 though. Papoose is a takedown version of the 795.

Can't be, 60 has a tube magazine.

Name that tune...

You are right... what I have can't be a 60.... it looks just like that but is mag fed.... I haven't had it out of the box except to oil it up once a year and have had it for 18 years.... it's in near mint.... what model would it be?

70HSC(later 7000 then, 795). Marlin 60 with mag instead of tube. I know... Currently have more than a dozen registered .22's. The only .22 I've parted ways with and, regret (I miss all the guns I've moved but, "regret" only one) transferring.

OP:

There are many tried n' true used semi .22's if you're patient enough...
I have a Nylon66. My luck at finding a fully functional, older, Mossberg has been limited but, for a semi .22, they are certainly accurate. I don't know a thing about the "newer" plinksters. Never underestimate those Springfield 87A(and a variety of different model names...6A). I adore my 64's. I really like my 597. All should be within your budget (Nylon 66's are climbing pretty quick though...)

795 is on cabelas for $140...does that price sound right?

Yup. They aren't expensive. The value for the dollar is incredible. Even the mags are metal and work properly.

But... they are very utilitarian. you wont find tons of accessories for them and they aren't the prettiest gun out there. But what they are is super reliable, super accurate, and full of features that dont match the price. I've been hoping they would make a stainless laminate version of the 795 to match my 60... someday.

They look like a good alternative to the base Ruger 10/22. IE the one that most of us use for a base build.

When I say one ragged hole with the T/c I'm talking about what a Target Ruger 10/22 with Lapua Super club generally shoots at 25 yards. A very small ragged hole.

While I do believe the 795 out shoots the stock Ruger 10/22, I don't believe it can compare with the T/C. There are very few Semi autos that shoot 1mo or less at 100 yards. The T/C does. I've seen it in more than one rifle as well.

That being said it may be a good option considering the budget and request for this thread. Definitely a rifle worth looking into.

I agree with the choice of the T/C R-55 Benchmark, I had a bunch of 22's but when I bought the T/C , I sold all the others. They shoot small groups out of the box . So if you can up your budget, get one, you won't regret it....if you can find one

My 597 VTR is extremely accurate. I do have issues with it jamming that I'm trying to work out. But it's more accurate than I ever expected it to be. I'm not a great shot and it's usually does 5 shot groups slightly bigger than 1/2 inch at 50 yards, 1.5 inches or so at 100 yards (I had one 3 shot group at 1.086 inches) and I can get pretty respectable hits on the paper at 200 yards. I haven't measured at 200 as I'm usually just using mil-dots at that point and having fun putting 20+ rounds into the target.

I picked up a Savage 64 TRR-SR from Ellwood Epps about two months ago and am very happy with it so far. Its a heavy barreled version of the standard 64 with a Boyds stock. Picked it up for $280. I haven't shot much paper with it yet but I spent some time this past weekend shooting at some 1.5 inch metal targets at 100 yards and them hit consistently with the help of my Bushnell 4-12X scope. My only criticism is that at over 6lbs the rifle would be a bit heavy for kids. Also doesn't come with irons sights.

I bought a 795ss and hated it. Loose sights ftes ftfs honestly could not get it to shoot reliably. Took it apart but couldn't find any hangups anywhere. I would still buy a tube mag to try it because I like testing them out. The most accurate I have ever owned is by far the cz 512. It is happy with the same ammo as my 452s. Cci minimags stingers and velocitors. For used a nylon 66 for sure. An anschutz 520 is really good too if you can find one. Hope this helps

The weight and lack of iron sites are directly related to the fact that it has a heavy barrel. The rifle wasn't intended to meet that criteria.

Not to hijack, but how do owners like their 597s? I've been thinking about picking one of those up. Reliability, accuracy, overall value, etc.

597's have a tarnished reputation, largely as a result of Remington's shoddy QC.

First, they had mag issues with early generations of magazines. They resolved this with the 3rd gen metal mags. This alone caused a tarnished reputation. Never mind the guide rod screws being too tight from the factory, causing many more FTE's.

Then, the .17HMR model was discontinued and owners got a slap in the face $200 offer. More tarnish.

Frankly, they're misunderstood, but an absolutely solid rifle. Just make sure the guide rod screws aren't too tight, and avoid the 30 round magazines, and its pretty reliable. Add a VQ hammer and extractor, and you're golden. They give 10/22's a run for their money.

I put a Boyds Thumbhole stock on my Marlin 795 -it looks good, shoots good and feels good-it would be close to perfect-IF they would do something about that AWFUL trigger.Funny-I shot a 30 year old marlin .22 that has a trigger way better...
