My wife has taken a liking to accurate 22 shooting, and I am looking to surprise her with a decent rifle. I've seen a few of the mark iis, and they seem great. Likely put a scope around 200ish on top. Would love to get her a ruger precision, but it is just out of price range.

What do you guys run? She is a better shooter than myself, so something with a high ceiling would be ideal

A Norinco Scorpio is 199$ and shoots as good as my T1x, which is 0.6" at 50y with CCI SV.

Of course, I happen to be selling one but my suggestion stands even if I wasnt. I'm just a few hours from ya.

Savage Mk2 is great, with my action, Boyd's stock and scope I have $500 into mine. With good ammo I can shot 1/2 MOA groups at 50m with it. Just basic ammo will do between .5-1" groups depending on flyers. Easy to mod trigger pull and things like that.

I've got several MK2s. They're the best bang for your buck when you buy the cheap models, the higher end are priced the same as a CZ.

The extraction issues, in my experience are maintenace related. Cleaning the extractor groove in the bolt is essential to keeping burnt powder from underneath the extractor, allowing it to properly seat under the cartidge rim. Depending on ammo, expect to clean it every 200 rounds or so. It takes 2 minutes when you've done it a couple times. I use a small flat head to help remove the c spring, and a nylon pick to get in the grooves. I personally dont clean my bolt face ever to keep a tight head space, but I do clean the extractor, ejector and firing pin grooves.

^that hasn't been my experience with the Scorpio..in fact, exactly the opposite. Bummer too, were that not the case...I'd have snagged one of the newer short barrel ones. The Tikka T1x on the other hand, one of the most accurate 22s I own...and IS the most forgiving on ammo types it'll shoot well.

I got into PRS last year shooting the heavier barrel version of the Scorpio, the Norinco ns522. They occasionally pop up for sale for around $400-500, and are great rifles. The Scorpios seem good too, I've got one for each of my kids now. I haven't shot the one the Scorpios near as much as my own rifle, but they seem pretty good. My 10 year old son was fairly consistent hitting 8-10" steel at 200m with CCI blazer and a 2-7 Simmons on his. Haven't shot my daughter's yet, it's for her birthday, which is today. There's a good chance you'll have to do a bit of work to a Scorpio though. The action on my son's rifle was pretty gritty and needed some polishing a and lapping in a few places, plus I made an extended bolt knob for some extra leverage, and a bit of polishing on the trigger to clean up the pull. The plastic stock was surprisingly good though, doesn't feel like a toy like many cheap ones do. It actually feels much better than the plastic stock on my Weatherby Vanguard.
Here's a target I shot at 50m with my Norinco using SK standard plus and using a cheap Mueller 4-16 scope.

Occasionally I can do something like this with it when I'm shooting better ammo, especially now that I've got a better scope.

Big fan of the TOZ 8M. It's a single shot .22, but the one I picked up is beyond accurate for a .22, couldn't be happier with it. That said, it is a bit of an ugly duckling as far as guns go.

The CZ-452 is NOT "$500 or less" and the'plus shpg' will run ca $50+
I'd suggest a Savage B22-FV that run ca $400 or so. Mine does 0.50" with SK+ and they have a rotary mag and will accept the Savage 25-round banana - if you want.

derek is right about the B22. I like the action better than my CZ 455 or 457, but I still have the B22 also. 'Old Friends' . . . ^O^ - the only rifle I've sold is an A22. I hated that 'Clunk' of the action and the heavy trigger pull.

Honestly, it's hard to beat the Savage MkII in that price range. There's a bazillion of them out there, "good enough" parts and warranty support, and lots of good options for when you want to change the stock. The other options don't really have any of this going for them.

The Savage MkII are generally known to have pretty good accuracy, but I always like to repeat the best advice I ever heard regarding "accurizing" a rifle: Buy three (or more) of the same model, test them side by side, keep the best and sell the rest. If you buy smart, you'll spend much less cash and time than you would on accurizing upgrades.

Paid $500 for my very lightly used 452 Varmint. Not hard to find used 452 models for $500.
