Most accurate 308 for $1000

Not out of the box, but a Stevens 200 with a pre-chambered match barrel from Mysticprecision and aftermarket trigger will be less than $1000 and should be a very solid gun accuracy-wise.

My experience is based on the following "new" out of the box rifles I've purchased over the past 5 years for under $1000.00..in order of my preference. Comments are based on "before" tweaking. All using handloaded ammunition.

TC Icon Sporter style - 3 in 308 - all sub MOA
Tikka sporter laminate stock - 1 in 308, 1 in 7-08 - both sub MOA
Remington 700's - several in both sporter and heavy barrel - most were about 1 MOA. One, an LTR in 308 is exceptional with under 1/2 MOA.
 
I hate to say it cause im a remington guy but one of those savage ftrs would be your best bet, they are winning all kinds of trophies with them that is if you can put up with owning an ugly savage ;) jk
 
Savage heavy barrels are clubs unrefined and nothing too nice about them but for the money you won't find a more accurate gun, mine was just under $800 and shoots 3/4 inch groups with cheap ball ammo at 200 yards... Not a savage fan but won't sell mine, too accurate for the money.
 
Little off your post New Out of box, I sold last year a Rem 700/308win with 24 Hart barrel that has shot quite a few groups sub .250" with 168gr Sierra's.
take a look at EE boards some times there are customs with trued actions and premium barrels for sale.I have seen a lot of factory guns shoot well but not as good as some builds.
 
I can really only relate to Production class benchrest rifles in CBA comp results where the .308 is king and the only 2 rifles you see are the Rem. 700 heavy bl. with lam. stock, and the heavy bl. Savages, for this class i prefer the Rem. as I find it more refined. I use the 700 with Leupold Competition 40X scope.
 
My Savage 12FVSS is pretty darned accurate. But if I could trade for a BVSS stock I would take it. I paid almost exactly $1000 for the gun and optics. It is a never seller.
 
Buy what you want. they all shoot the same... some good, some not and some in between. No Guarantee that one will be any better than another.

A factory gun is a factory gun.
 
The Savage is great. My 10FCP-HS was just about $1100. With hand loads i can get a under .5 average for a day of shooting (not just a few groups here or there). If you go with the savage, get one with the HS stock or Mcmillan (more expensive). As stated, the 5R is great, LTR is great (expensive as well).

Look into the 700 SPS Tactical. It is well under $1000, and will shoot very well. It has a 20" barrel, and Hogue stock. The stock has some sort of bedding, and is usable but you could always upgrade it later. Expect it to shoot .5-.75 out of the box with FGMM.
