Currently, the numbers show 37 votes for 1911s and 14/10 (total of 24) for the SW 686/629 and 27/29.

I think these stats reflect the numbers of revolver and semi-auto fans or the ratio of the number of these fans.

It think semi auto shooters love their 1911s as much as wheelgunners love their Smiths. There are just that many more semi auto pistoleros.

A beautiful pistol is whichever one goes bang when you desperately need it to. It doesn't matter if it's a $5,000 custom 1911, or a $75 Basque .32 that just came from the bottom of a mountain of cow sh*t - if your life is at risk and it goes bang, it's beautiful.

So elegant! How can you not like that? And I haven't met one that isn't a great shooter yet. I've owned more than 100 of these. Can't help myself. Pre-war to Stainless, that shape just does it. Unless of course you're partial to its older brother, which is getting to be my new favorite:

Walther P88. Better at those 100 meter shots in real life. Especially since I built the barrel myself (thank you, Bar-Sto, for your great design ideas, especially the flat spot on top of the ring) and it now shoots much better than I do. Function is beauty, accuracy is beauty, and then ... there's just simple good looks.
