I dont hunt, so i dont have a lot of knowledge about hunting bullets in general.

Im looking to load a few .308 rounds for "SHTF" situation. Never know when you might need to blast away a few zombies :)

What would be the best bullet to use on soft, unarmored deer-sized targets, if im looking to cause as much tissue dammage as possible?

I guess im looking for something like the "Varmint Grenade", but in .30 cal..

The .308 TSX bullet video on Barnes website ( hxxp://www.barnesbullets.com/information/high-speed-video/ ) is pretty impressive :)

Thanks!

Bullets are made to perfrom with a range of velocity. What caliber you loading for? 30-30 is different than 300 Win Mag.

I did mention in my post that i was looking to load for .308 (win). Sorry if i didnt make it clear. I will be loading these HOT, ~3000-3050 fps for 150gn bullets, 2850-2900 fps for 168-grainers. Should i consider using heavier bullets?

I use either Hornady SST(super shok-tipped) or Nosler Ballistic tips. The plastic-tip is forced back into the lead core on impact causing quit a bit of Fragmentation, I've used them on a few deer in my .308 and .270 and am VERY impressed with the damage out past 200yds.

I heard the Berger VLD bullets are great, and they dont fragment till a few inches in, causing the majority of the wound to be closer to the vitals.

You are talking 30-06 velocities from your 308 Win. Do you have a long barrel? [over 26"] If not, these are loads that are on the edge of danger. Keep in mind, if you are loaded very hot, one shot is all you may get. Can't shoot again if the bolt is siezed. Regards, Eagleye.

I agree. Why so fast? slow bullets do as much or more damage and don't stress the action. Higher velocities such as you are talking may not inflict the damage you are looking for on a human. Remember, animal hide is a little tougher than ours. There is a reason for higher velocities...longer distances and more kills.
I am going out on a limb here becasue I can no longer remember where I acquired this info(lore) maybe some of the older guys can confirm. It takes a minimum of 400 ft/lbs of terminal energy to stop/drop a man. It takes a minimum terminal energy of 800 ft/lbs to do the same to deer, and a min of 1000 ft/lbs for elk, moose, bear.
I know, they have been killed with bows, clubs, etc. I don't know where I got this info but that is what I load to. I figure out my max distance, find the speed I need to push at for the terminal energy, and load to that. That way I can keep my loads lighter and save the action. It still gets me plenty of deer. Gives me pet loads for each different rifle, since I match the rifle to the job.
Any help out there guys? Maybe Ganderite or 4831?
