Most likely cartridges for big game hunting to find factory ammo on remote shelves?

Well that didn’t help my bias. Got to town finally, Fort Smith NWT, only rifle ammo is .308 180 grain, good price too. .30-30 was the only other chambering on the shelf, but out of stock.

That helps affirm my decision to go .308 for everything.

interesting and i imagine the rangers patrol doesnt need that much of them with all the ammo given to them but still interesting.

and waterfowl shots ... seems like any communauties in the north practical before hype ...

IMO you are drawing the wrong conclusion; the 308 is there because no one is using it, the 30-30 is gone because it is being used.

It's like the lonely box of 280 Remington I've been seeing on the same shelf for a few years.

Gets a bit hard tough to support that line of thought when you look around the marketplace. It’s the most stocked chambering by retail in the country, hands down. Find that at my local shop, in Fort Smith, and online by a country furlong.

Doesn’t mean we have to love .308, but it is without question the most stocked and prevalent big game chambering in Canada. It’s the one round I’d be confident can be sourced in Tuktoyaktuk, or Bulawayo in a spare hour. Or Fort Smith NWT. How important that is or if there are more likeable chamberings isn’t the debate.

I'd love to see what some of you are considering "remote". Here's a starting point...there's one road in, and it's gravel. Bonus points if there is a sign that says "Next Services ###km". Double the points if there is a seasonal road only. Triple if there is no road at all.

If a paved road leads to it, it's not remote.

B.U.M. that is a great description.

My take, 303 (probably 308 now) if the Govt is paying, 22 if your paying.

well for giggles I went to Cabelas USA website and checked how many factory ammo offerings available for these popular options...

74 for the 308
62 for the 223
46 for the 30-06
33 for the manbun

not much else ran up there past 30 options, the 308 destroyed them all

I was surprised how many manbun options were available but dang that 308 has the options covered! I had to put the .223 in there to reference against, you know that's gonna have a ton of options yet the 308 still beats on it.

I know, it’s got the formula I love with 168’s or better but just not the recoil but since I have this boner for ruger Hawkeye Hunter and already have the 3/4 scale in the Grendels for volume shooting etc and the Ruger 308 is 20” vs 22” vs the other two options I was looking at I may end up with one. The only downside is it’s a 30 lol...always hated them, recoil thing, happier with 270’s or 270 wsm’s in 7 lb all up stuff than I’ve ever been with any 30 with anything with a decent bc/sd...and that vanilla thing is part of it also. Tempting. Next week I’ll be hard for a manbun and week after that it’ll be for the ott 6. Need one of those rugers.
