Most powerful and practical antique handgun

Well, you have the comfort of knowing the East Anglia peelers are just a phone call away, if you lucky you may even draw one actually carrying a gun!!!

I have eighteen of my own, thanks. The thought of encountering a police officer with a gun is something that can keep you awake nights. 'Police marksman' is THE definitive oxymoron.

It gets even better ....

now we await the first account of a CGN'er dropping a charging bear with a .25 ACP pistol.

All the theoretical bafflegab about penetration, expansion, etc., doesn't justify betting your life on the effectiveness of an "antique" revolver in a charging bear scenario.

A lot of small calibre rifles and pistols can and have been used on game and people, but wiser heads advise using 'enough gun' if you want to survive. If we cared to research it, we'd find as many if not more stories about inadequate calibres resulting in the deaths of the users.

In BC, you cannot use a 45-70 on Bison, despite the lore of even lesser calibres being used to decimate the herd. Why? Because a woman was steamrollered by a Bison she hit 5 times with her .270. One well placed bullet ought to have done the job. Now you need a minimum .30 calibre 175 gr bullet putting out the required number of joules of energy. That means a top loaded .30-'06 180 gr load.

I'd feel better with my Sharps 50-70 or 45-70 '86.

Heres a few stories i found with a quick search now my 44 Sp handguns and my 45 schofield with reloads have more power than a 25 acp . anyway plenty of bears have been killed with small caliber handguns.
so its been done plenty of times.

Have had a few face-offs with wildlife over the past 45 years.
Most recently, while canoe camping in central Ont..
Tenting with my sister and grade school aged niece and nephew, I was awakened at pre-dawn gloaming by a Blackie foraging around in camp.
With kids sound asleep, it seemed prudent to drive the bold bruin off, then ski-dadle the youngster’s outta there in the canoes.
To that end, the antique revolver was loaded and the bear confronted at 25 yards or so.
He ignored my demands to vacate, and carried on trying to find his breakfast at the(clean) firepit.
Standoff.
Re-assured by the .45, I advanced a few steps and sternly repeated my commands. Bruin remained totally indifferent.
What to do now?.
Not wanting to awaken the tykes and have them milling about with a bear and a revolver in play … yelling was a no-no, so, I advanced some more and tossed an oak stick at his haunch. That worked. Blackie wandered off with aire’s of indignation, the kids got offshore right quick, while the adults broke camp.
No shots fired. Better believe though, that old antique felt welcome in the hand!.

And that is my point, predators seem to sense a humans resolve. Alpha behaviour has worked for me to diffuse confrontation. A convincing demonstration of alpha requires a gun in hand. They will smell ones fear if you are emptyhanded.

That was my post from a few years back, friend Dingus.
The bolded paragraph I stand convinced as fact.
Perhaps next time with a revolver in hand .... purchased from you!.

I agree and im by no meens saying people should be useing 25 acp or 32 rimfires to ward off bear attacks thos are just examples i found being as "someone" here wanted to see it was even posible.
Your Right to it does make you feel 100% diffrent when confronting a bear with empty hands or with some type of gun i ran into many black bears on my trapline in the early fall years ago always had some type of gun and any gun is better than no gun.

for thos that really want to know what can be done with antique handguns ,, Read Elmer keith book SIXGUNS you will see how well handguns can be used to save you in a bind. he has had to shoot a galloping outa controll Horse in the back of the head as he was being flug along for the ride and Elmer did most of his early shooting ALL with BLACKPOWDER Cartridges , he shot bulls and all kindsa wild game, great big cats like cougars ect ect.
Also whats important is the type of bullet you use SWC and WC are the best for fast bleed outs not RN bullets thats why he designed the bullets he used.
Elmer shot alot of big game with 45 colt with full BP loads in the SAA colt alot of his SAA colts just sold at auction were in fact pre 1898 custom guns in 44 sp to.
To me Elmer Keith was the best guy to read up on to do with sixguns and what they can and cant do, he already took all the risks so as long as you follow his guidelines and read what he says to the T you can get alot more from certin guns than you would think.
I know i have.

Mine are; .45ACP Mk1 Webley, and .44special Reichrevolver.
The important variable as to effectiveness, in my opinion, is how one goes about loading for 'em.

The common denominator being Alliant 2400 powder. And Keith SWC's cast soft.

My .45 has long chambers and the throats opened up to .454, with a .454 bore. For that one the business load is built on .45 win mag brass trimed back to .990". They ride in modified moon clips, though I've heard that starline cases will fit the moons as is .. mine are WW, so need a bit of dremelling. A charge of 2400 to give the 245gr boolits 800fps over the chronograph. These are not everyday plinkers, for that it's same boolit over unique to 700fps ...
SA, shots go high and left. Fast DA, they on on POA at 20.(why is that?) ... 5 inch groups typical.

The fowty-fowr spl., she does somewhat better power wise, being a stout solid frame SA revolver. 850fps/2400 with .432" gc 240gr soft cast Keith's. Again, they also go high/left for me.
Reich gets carried hammer down on empty chamber. A 5 shot. Shoots 4" at 20 for me.

Alas ... I'm not a good pistol shot. But that won't matter much at fur-burn distances.
These two are hardly .25acp's eh.

From Elmer Keith's "Sixguns":

"A factory .38-40 load almost cost me my life while monkeying with a wounded bull elk. The bullet simply splattered on the elk's skull, and did not penetrate. Had the cylinder not been loaded alternately with heavy black powder loads, that bull would have ended my hunting."

Many people have had close encounters and even tussles with bears... Haha . When in bear country I carry a 12 " dominion arms pump in 12 gauge , light short and fast and can be had for under $300 . Bearspray and a webley are also on my belt . The antique revolver works great when your leg or arm is getting chewed repeated shots in the head or chest will have the desired effect and works better tha a knife , and by the way many bear attacks have been stopped with a knife and a mauled survivor . Never underestimate the will to live and fight . More important is practice until it becomes second nature

All you need is a knife. My neighbor killed one with his mora, it pounced him 400 yds from his bait site, tore his back up bad and rolled him over, he pulled the knife and got 9 good jabs in and the sow ran off, she made it 40 yds and tried burrowing into a rock pile and bled out. That’s where we found her the next day. He wears the claws with pride... mans got a bigger set on him then a lot of guys lol. He nearly bled out though on his way out of the woods, lucky to survive.
