It seems to be pretty widely believed that we as a civilization have collectively reached the pinacle of firearms innovation.

Yep, and I'm betting that the conventional wisdom on this point is wrong--just like history shows that it always is;-)

The current tech constraints are hampering weapon design -- as well as finanical constraints.

The German gov't had to shelve the G11.K2 due to cost. Then SCAR and other USSOC testing has shown that the most effective systems out there are not revolutionary designs.

If anything the LandWarrior/Soldier Systems craptastic stupidity of OICW/XM-8 etc should have shown us that the sort of system proposed above is unworkable as an Infantry weapon

20 x 24mm?

sounds like a 20mm diameter HE round, and with only a 24mm long case, probably a low velocity "lob" rather than a hi-vel long distance shooter.

more like a new high tech version of the old Vietnam era M79 "Blooper"

That was my first thought, 20mm mini gernades. Should have no problem reaching out to 300m even with the short case, 20mm round and 24mm long still leaves a lot of case capacity, with a faster power you should get a decent Mv

I would'nt want to be on the recieving end of a section equipted with variable time fused rounds, set for distance, you couldn't hide behind anything for cover.

personally i think that South african rifle is sweet, about the only thing thats not sweet about it is

A the sick cost of the ammo
B the fierce recoil (could be or has been fixed I dont know)
C the total inability to have a high cap mag
D Whats with the grip on the side? totally wierd

other than that, COOl

I think the OICW is workable, just needs a hell of a lot more work on it. and will still cost a bloody fortune. but other than that i think it could be a real BadA**

I am honestly surprised no one has come up with a single shot 20mm grenade launcher for use on existing rifles. The tech is there, why not make one for the AR15/M16 series?

heck yeah, ive read about some pretty cool stuff from there. one good thing i saw was basically a pistol that looked sort of like a mac 10 and uzi cross, and the thing fired freaking 12 gauge shells. super cool :) id love me one of those.

Cause they are ineffectual -- the 20mm round (the low vel manporable version)s has a worthless payload.

Imagine a grenade with a dnager radius of aboout 15m and a lethal radius of 1m
That is one of the reasons the GL side of OICW died.

Might you be thinking of the MAG-7? Cause that's also a South African design.
