i mounted a williams peep site on my marlin 336, but had to install a taller front blade sight, and the thing is so fugly, and for the life of me, i cannot seem to get the thing to shoot straight. i'm looking for something low profile and simple that i can mount on it, go out and shoot with a reasonable expectation of being accurate. any suggestions. would ghost ring sites be a good bet?
 
I just bought the X/S ghost ring sites for my levergun, i love em. they were a breeze to install, and work like a charm
 
X2 on the XS sights. They are the best. This is my guide gun.

your guide gun is a 45/70 correct? are they adjustable at all, or does it require reasonable practice and compensation for longer distances. my 336 is a 1969 and i'll be shooting hornady leverevolution stuff, along with the standard flat nosed 170gr stuff.
 
It depends what you want. if you want accuracy, go with the williams. the smaller apetures and interchagable peeps are fantastic.

if you want fast handling go with the XS or WWG ghostrings.

I've been using a williams FP-336 with front red firesite on my .450 for many years now. very accurate with the peep in, I can unscrew it for ghostring size. always holds it's zero. this rifle spends all spring and fall bouching around in trucks, boats, helicopters, etc while I guide/work. never had one problems with it.

Ditto, I think you could find one of the old ones like a Lyman but they're not real practical. No windage adjustment on most of the old ones so the newer Marbles tangs would work better for you as they have the windage adjustment on them now.

I use the Williams peep rear and firesight front on my Marlins, but honestly I think the firesight front is more valuable then the rear sight, at least for my hunting conditions.

The Williams is probably more accurate but under rough field use they are vulnerable to damage.....the screw-in aperture is likely to break off if the gun falls over, and the horizontal arm of the sight is unsupported and vulnerable....I would go with the ghost ring every time...
 
I have checked out the Skinner site and it does look kinda funky especially the brass unit. It says it is available with a ghost ring aperture as well. Would the front sight need to be changed for the ghost ring to a post? Or will a ghost ring work well with a bead too? Old Marlin Glenfield (336) 30-30. Thinking of better sights and some Leverevolution ammo for some serious fooling around with the old dirty 30. Thanks for the tip. Feedback on using the Skinner? Just have factory sights at this time and the front sight is not ramped.
 
I use a Lyman adjustable rear peep sight on my 45/70 guide gun and would like to use a fibre optic front.

I found some but I'm not sure what height... they are also all blued, are there any in stainless?

Check the info on the sight you are using. If the sight you have works with your current bead or whatever then it should work fine. The height is the kicker and I noticed in the XS site they talked about bead height for specific models although the Williams sight I have is adjustable to a fairly large degree so should accomodate pretty much anything. It has at least a 1/4in height adj. Got a smokin deal off of the EE for a Williams and it fit like it was made for it.
 
I just got a Williams peep sight off of the EE. If you have the same series as I do then height of bead is adjustable. The height adj screw has at least 1/4in of travel and should accomodate lots of different front sights fwiw. Have yet to shoot mine but the snow is off the range soon and I will be taking the old girl out to see how she likes it.
 
I've got the Skinner sight on my Marlin .357 and it works great. I got the front and rear sight combo from Skinner, I think it was like $5 or $10 more. Accuracy is great and target visibility is great also.
