So I send my spare 5R barreled action to Guntech for the following work.
Action True (Factory barrel)
Heavy recoil lug from Alberta Tactical Rifle
Near Base and Rings 8-40 screws and lapped
Trigger to 2.5lbs (the worst 700 trigger ever according to Dennis, but it is super nice now)
Deep recess target crown
Got it back today (Happy New Year), very nice work. According to Dennis this particular action was already quite true, one of the best he had seen, he also managed to index the stamping almost exactly OEM. I have a new set Williams one piece bottom metal to use with it as well. Now for the down side.
- Which stock to use, I have a 700P, AICS and a McMillian M40a1 sitting in the safe...:eek:In any event here are some pics, that lug is FAT.

McMillian M40a1 may be most appropriate to the 5R rifling but an unused AICS stock is just wrong... would go with the AICS until another barrelled action arrives for it, then switch it over to M40a1 (and then its "new" again too).

Scope?

MK4-10X...May just stuff it in a Police stock for Marky Mark looking "Shooter" . Sad thing is I have a "Full House" gun being built and with mounting costs I may have to get rid of this one to pay for the other...Man these things are total "Gateway" guns, It was just gonna be a simple and cheap build...atleast they are not as pricey as fine Shotguns...

Where did you get the 5R Milspec? I looked on Remington's site and found nothing... and I googled it and some guy was on a forum saying that it was only a batch that Rem ran thru in 2001??

Have a look at mlebler's post on his full custom from ATRS. I feel a little guilt there as I put him onto the R5. Think he had it for maybe 3 months before it and several others made way for the ATRS build. The upside is, I may be able to persuade him to let me try it this spring. Still owe him a round for a die too.

Will see Dennis about the triggers in my R5s too. Had not thought about recrowning but it sure looks good. If I'm not satisfied with how it shoots will ask him to true the action may then just go the one step further and crown it too.

Edit - Fry, Frontier has one for ~1250. Whylook and Accuracy Plus had them for 1,000. Whylook my still have his, I got the last one at Accuracy Plus but maybe more came in. Also search for 700 SS 5R

Looks pretty ###y, but let's hear about the 'full house' gun ;)

I try not to think about the full house gun...the money being sunk into it is absolutely silly for a hack like me with zero precision experience...I will do a proper reveal when it is done...this one should be a nice shooter though, if I keep it I will send it to Longshot for a bolt handle, useless but should be good for sh!tz and giggles...:onCrack:
eta: I must admit the Near components are absolutely amazing...I have had Badger components on a previous build but these IMO are wa nicer...the lug on the 25moa base has some nice CDI factor as well...

The full on build, hmmm
You guys just have to tough it out and wait, it'll be worth it. ;)
As far as this 5R I'm all grins, cause she followed me home:).

Yes they are just gonna have to wait. I can also say that it's gonna look spectacular when she's done.

Ray is definitely gonna be a lucky man when he finally gets her!;)

I can't wait to get my grubby paws on it before Ray gets her - LMAO!:p:D

That's all I'll say and leave it at that, it's Ray's baby and his right to show her off when he gets her.

All the best and Happy New Year!

Fry, check out this review of the 5r Milspec for some background information. Remington makes a small number each year but doesn't list it on their web site. You can probably get a new one from one of the dealers on the Employee Exchange or Ellwood Epps.

May I ask what a true job for a 700 would be? How much $$? I figure I it be best to get all the custom work all at once. Do the aftermarket barrels make that much of a difference over the factory ones?

This is what I do and charge... http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=300968

It is extremely rare to find a factory barrel that will shoot better than a good aftermarket barrel. Shooters today have a great selection of quality match grade barrels to choose from.

Well she's been mounted in a buddies AICS...since he milled out the lug recess I think I may have a tough time getting this thing back...I will post a few pictures this week...

Here she is sitting in a AICS...sure is pretty. I do think she would have looked and carried nicer in the spare McMillan HTG stock I have...

Put it this way...Ray's full on custom rifle is going to have a fraternal twin :D

Uh uh ohhh I may have seen something in sparrows safe that looked like the full on build. Can't be sure but it was definatly an AICS stock finished in desert tan digital with some kind of custom action maybe a surgeon or similar, and then the safe doors closed. :( and then the USO glass, hope it's all finished soon, I want to see it already.

Bugger...what you glimpsed was a PGW marked scope SN-3 and a AICS Chassis with Skullboy paint job...as for the receiver we'll leave that out for now, I don't want to have this thread locked just because of a shiny with integral base and recoil lug, not to mention the GIANT bolt handle...;). Back on topic, anyone else have any range reports after Guntech's magic touch...
