Good chance I might be moving away from The "Great White North" for a 3-10yrs. I have a great revolver that is like new but where I maybe going....no bang! bang! allowed. :eek: How should I prepare my stainless S&W 686 for a long hibernation? It came from my Pop so I am not willing to sell it. How should I store it, grease it....moth-ball it?

Stainless revolvers are not noted for rusting if they are kept dry but I would still lightly oil it using a synthetic or G-96 Gun Treatment which is silicone based. Some natural oils dry up and harden causing more of a problem than having not used anything. If this is stored where it is dry - storage should not be a problem.

The most important part is the paperwork with the government. Right now you are supposed to store this at your residence under your control. Perhaps you should be asking the Canadian Firearms Center what your options are.

'Best find a trusted friend to hold on to it for you...
I've done this for a guy ina similar boat... Not a big deal.

Sorry Sendero... I meant "Great White North" to be understood as
Canada...you know Bob and Doug McKenzie? ..."Hoser take off eh!"...the guys that drink far too much Molson Canadian out of stubby beer bottles. Maybe I'm getting old?

Ya, good chance that I may have to leave Canada for a bit.

Canada= RED..White... and "GOLD"

I bought a stainless revolver that the previous owner had left in his safe for 9 years..uncleaned.
The only problem with it was some green corrosion from gun powder residue I assume.
It cleaned up and functions flawlessly.

Dip it in a preserving oil, so it can reach the carbon steel spring'.

Let it drain for a bit, put it into a plastic bag.

Put the bag into a good .30 cal can, throw in a bunch of dessicant's and maybe some vapour corrosion inhibitor (V.C.I.)

You have 4 layer's of protection.

the best way is to have some one look after it for you but they will have to have there resticted PAL to do it.All you do is get a short term storage att that will let to other person keep it till you come back

One good way is to dip it in a tin can full of oil and heat up to > 100°C to evaporate all water that might have been absorbed by microscopic cracks and cavities. Then wrap in oily cloth and seal in a ziplock.

What about a simple process of oiling lightly, adding a dessicant package, and 'processing' in a Food Saver vacumn sealer ? Then, depending on storage location, a suitable container to protest from elements, bugs, UV, etc..
