I just bought the 54 cal. Lyman Trade Rifle. I am going to be buying some moulds and I noticed that Lyman & Lee makes a Minie in .540 and .533. Is there any one that has had experience in shooting both from a Trade rifle and which one was best? Also, how do the Lee REAL bullets shoot from the Trade Rifle and which size (300 grain or 380 grain) shoots best?
 
I have a .54 Trade rifle and have shot nothing but round balls. There is nothing that I will ever shoot at that needs more than a 230g pure lead round ball. I get good accuracy with a .530 ball and 18th pillow ticking patch. Besides that, I am recovering from shoulder surgery and sure don't want to punish it with the recoil from heavy bullets. I did try a .535 round ball mould but it fit so tight that it was cutting the patches, and a real brute to seat. I am sure that you are going to love that rifle like do mine.
 
Even with the slow twist in these guns, I've always found that the Lyman Plains bullets most accurate, both in .50 and .54 cal., both molds are single cavity and avail. from Lyman.
 
Thanks for the info. I am planning on getting the .530 round ball and trying that. But I also moose hunt was thinking of something heavier than the round ball for that.
