Boot fit is so often a personal preference thing. I've had/have a bunch of different boots. 'Best/Favorite Boot' for me depends a bit on the trip/terrain/loads.
The Salomon 4D is a comfortable, decent light hiker and I use it a lot. It crumbles under heavy loads and in really steep country. They also get shredded in talus and scree.
My favorite 'intermediate' backpack boot, the class of boot I've owned the most of, so far has been the Hanwag Yukon. The leather lined equivant to the Alaskan GTX. (I prefer leather lined boots.) They are a excellent boot. Comfortable, quite supportive and durable in the rocks. If I could only have one pair of boots, it would be these.
In truly steep country the leather lined Hanwag Omegas shine beyond anything else I've used. Built like tanks, but still extremely comfortable. I really need to source another pair.
