I didn't want to pollute ardents mountain thread, as its one of my favourite on here, but what are guys running for mountain boots? Ive been looking at new boots for this season, and just wondering what guys are liking these days?

Boot fit is so often a personal preference thing. I've had/have a bunch of different boots. 'Best/Favorite Boot' for me depends a bit on the trip/terrain/loads.

The Salomon 4D is a comfortable, decent light hiker and I use it a lot. It crumbles under heavy loads and in really steep country. They also get shredded in talus and scree.

My favorite 'intermediate' backpack boot, the class of boot I've owned the most of, so far has been the Hanwag Yukon. The leather lined equivant to the Alaskan GTX. (I prefer leather lined boots.) They are a excellent boot. Comfortable, quite supportive and durable in the rocks. If I could only have one pair of boots, it would be these.

In truly steep country the leather lined Hanwag Omegas shine beyond anything else I've used. Built like tanks, but still extremely comfortable. I really need to source another pair.

We put more miles on mountain boots between us than most guiding mountain game. My head guide and I both really like the Scarpa Grand Dru GTX. nmo, member here guides with me and does lots of sheep guiding too and likes Sportivas. Most of the quality boots are really good now and it’s all down to fit, like others have alluded I’d budget a rifle’s price for them. They’re more important than the rifle honestly.

I have the Grand Dru GTX and they are great but I find them too stiff I think. Ran a pair of Kennetrek for Dall in August and they were very comfortable but the sole started separating pretty quick although it never got bad enough to affect hunt. They replaced them NC to the heavier duty mountain guide (or whatever its called) model. Going to run them on a rough country Aoudad hunt in couple weeks and see how they hold up. I hope they do as I find them very comfortable and about the right stiffness for me.

I just picked up a set of Kennetrek mountain hunter boots. They are supposed to be the bees knees for tough boots. They cost almost the same as a set of truck tires, so they better be.
