Some people claim that you don't have to be completely out of your mind to go mountain goat hunting. You can't trust these people because they will lie about other things too. They might be either sadly misinformed or crazy or sadistic, but either way they are wrong. It is a sport for lunatics. Have you ever been tortured to the point of despair, exhausted beyond belief and contemplating shooting yourself? Goat hunters dream of being that happy. That's a party to a goat hunter.

Sometimes it gets bad though. Thoughts are divided roughly into 1 % goats, 9 % falling and 90% just jumping and getting it over with.

After reading this post I'm not sure if I want to admit to being a goat hunter. :)

Whelan and I had been chatting a goat hunt, it is indeed probably the most physical hunt in North America. Where the sheep stop, goats keep going. This said, they are not nearly as wary as sheep, if you spook sheep they'll top the ridge they're on and potentially the next one. Goats will climb to the nearest face, stand on top of it and look back. They know they live on the most ridiculous terrain there is and can climb the worst of it, to a degree it boggles the mind. Look up the Rocky Mountain Goat Foundation for a great series of videos and pics, hunting and otherwise, of mountain goats.

Interesting side fact is they're not actually a goat. They are their own genus, Oreamnos, within Caprinae (subfamily of Bovidae), and are for a shorthand forum synopsis as closely related to the goats as they are to sheep. They are the last surviving member of Oreamnos, the others having died out ages ago. Hunts are physically challenging but not impossible, you're fit enough by good measure and after one you'll probably call it good on the species. I have a fourth time mountain goat hunter coming this fall and I'll analyze him to determine why.

Weather can be atrocious given it's the mountains in fall. August weather is generally the best, but the goats can be high, they like to stay cool and food is still plentiful meaning they don't have to huddle near it. Hair will be shorter in August, many consider this to be a big part of the trophy, I personally think the experience is the trophy. Now the disclaimer is these comments come from an early thirty-something that mountain treks for recreation, I had to helicopter out one client last year on a mountain goat hunt who lost the ability to walk.

It's an awkward ground for me to describe and as such you'll see me describe goats variously as the hardest hunt we have and totally doable. I also think bang for your buck, in scenery, experience, and effort it is the best value trophy North America has. You'll spend at least double, and more likely triple goat hunt's price to hunt sheep, and you could easily spend a half dozen goat hunt's worth to hunt a stone sheep which are running all over the mountains ranges to the north. I'm cooking dinner and about to be slaughtered when my wife gets home for the lack of progress, so forgive typos and I'll get back to this thread.

It's because he has 'the bug'. The feeling of accomplishment and euphoria you get by succeeding at something that tests your physical and mental limits. Pretty much all athletes in the 'extreme' sports, experience this. For myself it was (maybe still is) rock climbing. Successful goat hunting to me is the equivalent of sending a 5.13d (hardest climb I ever did)

A shortage of knees or lungs might be compensated for by an abundance of crazy. It's the craziness that's manditory.

I've got one goat, but nobody has ever accused me of being entirely normal. Or even partly normal for that matter.;)

Then I should be good to go...

I'm sure there are many medical professionals who would welcome the opportunity to have his head candled. Advanced delusions of that magnitude are rare.

Hardest/funnest hunt I've ever done. The scenery and experience can't be beat imo. My first trip at 15 we got skunked off highway 37 but seen some nannies and kids, no Billy's. Regardless I felt like I conquered the world getting up there, other times I was sure I was gonna tumble of the mountain. It's an eerie feeling having a full pack looking down hundreds if not thousands of feet while side hilling with sheer cliffs below!

WL............I have participated in 5 goat hunts and taken 3 myself on these five hunts and taken 3 others for the guys who were crazy enough to accompany me. I have no pics as I didn't carry a camera back then.........maybe they hadn't been invented yet, I'll have to check. I have to go for dinner right now but I will return to regale you with tales of harvesting our cloud dwellers...........

Now this is one of the most entertaining reads I've seen in a while, thanks!

I've seen a number of goats in my mountain travels. Never been lucky enough to hunt them. That will have to change one of these years. In the am time I'll keep on chasing sheep.
