Mountain hunting caliber

A lighter gun is nice for mountain hunting. A 7mm in either a 7-08, 280 Rem, 7x57, 280 AI are all good starting points. But there are other great and capable calibres out there. Sheep hunting can put you in griz country so some might feel more comfortable with a 7 or 30 mag of some sort.

Agreed, and .270win and .270wsm, 6.5X55swede, 6.5 Creedmoor...any of the lighter flat shooting calibres are good, but you might want a magnum if you're in grizzly country.

Lol, just read you went with the .270wsm...awesome...and in a light rig that won't hold you back in the mountains! good choice!

This is mountain goat country (goats in the pic) and your expressed interest, 8lb rifles, .45-70s, and blued guns are rather an irritation up there in my opinion. You're hunting Mars and your gear has to be up to the challenge.

Ah yes... you will not be able to kill let alone even hunt sheep unless you commit your kid's college fund to the sheep god! So, without KUIU or Sitka, don't even... just don't even!

Contrary to popular belief, a .45-70 can shoot reasonably flat out to 300 yards or so. I can load my Ruger No.1 with 300gr X bullets at 2600 fps MV, and the impact point is only -8" at 300 yards -

Meanwhile his .270 WSM sighted in at 300 is +/- the length of a playing card to 350 yards of point blank range, and it weighs pounds less. :) But this wouldn't be the Internet if we didn't get wildly curious suggestions as answers to the question "What is the best..." Colour is what makes a forum tick!
