Mountain Lions-Thunder Bay

Yep , just saw that . No way these are escaped pets as the MNR is putting out as a possibility . They're being reported from Kenora across northern and northwestern Ontario down into central and southern Ontario unless more mountain lions are being smuggled than cocaine or pot and first person sightings go back decades . I know of a fellow who was building power transmission lines into Red Lake in 1948 and saw a cougar hanging in front of a trappers cabin . The first one i saw was in 1980 .

Good day: My wife and i own a camp north of a little town called massey, ont. About 15 years ago we saw a cougar/panther cross the road in front of us just north of the chutes prov park on hwy 153.
We couldn't get over the size of this cat as it crossed the road in front of us, my wife commented on the length of it's tail.

This was supposed to have been drawn by a Sioux man well over 100 years ago. I don't think the Sioux homeland is supposed to have had big cats.

A little off topic, but I have a very good friend here in Alberta, approaching 90 who builds beautiful bows from scratch. He told me once that the best game meat he ever had was from cougar. When I lived in ne Saskatchewan the local trappers always save lynx etc for the pot, apparently it was a substitute for chicken, very close in flavour.

The one I crossed paths with just north of the turn off into PANP took up one lane of the highway tail to snout.

Jaguars at one time roamed into the southwestern states until their range was reduced by the coming of the white man. I can’t remember where I read that or how true it is.

The Sioux's range and the claimed historic jaguar range are about 1000 miles apart.

I had a trapper tell me that he has Lynx stew once or twice a winter, to help stay healthy. He said it fends off scurvy during the winter. He lived in the bush in his cabin south of Pickle Lake, and ate nothing but wild game and fish.

They're around even east of T Bay- there have been reliable sightings north of Ottawa and in Vermont and in the Eastern Townships of Quebec that adjoin that state. When they've been DNA tested, scat and hair samples etc, it seems they've turned out to be western cougars or their descendants that escaped from individual menagerie owners or were deliberately released pets. No human incidents yet though.

How far North ??

Back about 45 years ago I was going fishing at Whitefish Lake in the Porcupine mtn's of west central Manitoba and a cougar ran across the road in front of me, maybe 50 yards away. This was in june or july.

They have been sighted in the Midland Ont area for years. Our trail groomer operators used to see them often in winter while out grooming. We had lots of rabbits and deer on the property to keep them around. Of course the MNR denies everything, as there were unsubstantiated rumors they had planted a pair in the area. The MNR is so full of sh!t and themselves I am surprised there not issued hip waders as standard equipment.
