If you were looking for a lighter weight "mountain" rifle, that was chambered in a cartridge capable of killing all NA non dangerous game at 400 yards, what FACTORY offering would you choose? :)

No customs allowed;)

mnt rifle .

gatehouse. i would choose the 3006 in weatherby ultralite.very nice and seem to balance well .

1) Kimber 8400 in one of:
270 WSM
7mm WSM
300 WSM
325 WSM

2) Sako Finnlight in .280 Rem, .30-06, or a WSM

3) Rem 700 Mountain lss in the above cals. ^

the Browning A-Bolt Mountain Ti and the Remington 700 Titanium are the only super-lightweight rifles ive actually handled, and between those the Browning was by far the nicer of the two. the problem is that the Browning is only chambered in WSM calibers. the Remington 700 Titanium in .308 is only 5 1/4lbs, and 5 1/2 for the .30-06.

the 700 Alaskan Ti in .300 Win Mag seems pretty cool, but its still a push feed and creeping up to 6 1/4lbs, at which point i dont see the point of shelling out over $2200 for a titanium rifle.

in the end i suppose it would be the Remington Ti in .308 at 5 1/4lbs, with quality aluminum weaver rings/bases and a light scope.
ive never taken a shot at anything other than varmints at 400 yards though, so i wouldnt be too confident with a .308 or even .30-06 at that range, id be much happier with a .300 Win Mag but they dont offer them in the 700 Ti. as much as i dislike them perhaps a short mag in the Browning Ti would be the answer?

edited above post to add rifle

the 700 is pretty light, titanium would reduce the weight by about 4-6 oz but thats not a big deal and it would have to be a custom rebarrel job to 280. The edge is a great stock which is strong and light. topped with a trim leupold, 3-9x33 or 2-7x33, the whole rig would be around 7 lbs scoped, maybe a bit less

I would choose a either a remmy TI, abolt TI or sakofinnlight in .280 or the Model 700 LSS in .257wby but I'd replace the stock with a light weight high quality synthetic.

*edit*damn TB beat me to the punch.

280 Rem with 150 tsx @ 2900 f/s in a 700 LSS mtn rifle which was restocked with a Mcmillan Edge

It may be too much of the home made hooch, but I'm thinking exactly what TB said. In fact, my fancy high-dollar custom 280AI essentially recreates this exact rifle. If I was buying a mountain rifle today, I would do exactly this or buy a Montana.

That'd be my Stainless Mod. 70 Classic All Terrain (tuperware featherweight copy) with 24" factory barrel rechambered to 7 STW. Its a drill so the stock stays. As much as I'm off Rems. and will never own another, I have had several in the past and the Mountain Rifles are extremely nice handleing/carrying. As Mr. Bartell said the Laminated Stainless would be pretty hard to beat.
