Mountain rifle

270 win or 308 on a stainless 700, restocked with a banser or mcmillan.

put a nice FX3 6x42 in talley's on the roof and you're set.
Late last year I sold a 700 SPS in 270Win restocked in a Bansner w/Talleys.

I just bought it back last week. :dancingbanana:

I have a new/matte VXII LR reticle in 2x7 that will be perfect on it. :)

those of you saying .308 and .30-06 -- you guys would feel comfortable taking 400 yard shots with these calibers? reason i ask is its nearly a 30" holdover at that range with a 200 yard zero.
with a 300 Win Mag zeroed at 250 its about half that.

not hasslin anyone, just curious. how many of you guys take ~400 yard shots with .308/.30-06s? at game, not targets. i have more .308s than anything else but im not comfortable taking shots that long with them.

what would you zero at? what bullet would you choose?

what sortof accuracy can you expect from the Browning and Remington Tis?

The one thing I personally don't like about the Kimber Montana is that it has a blind magazine
you asked about a "mountian rifle"
IMO it has no buttons to catch on sticks or whatever to drop the floorplate or mag
and besides that for me personally once Im out of the truck its loaded till i put it back into the truck (if its not already loaded)
in the scabbord loaded in the tent loaded
it is a Mountian rifle not a truck or road hunting gun
it is also CRF a must in my books for hunting
the 300 wsm just makes it that much better
and
the more I shoot it the better it feeds too

I's far easier and far more precise to adjust your elevation settings than use "hold over" when getting at longer ranges...

Yes I asked about a mountain rifle, and plenty of them out there are made with a blind magazine, but I think it is a deficiency. A kimber with a hinged floorplate would be a very attractive rifle, IMHO.

Why would you compare a 300 at 250 with an '06 at 200??

Zero that '06 at 260 yards using a 180 grain Ballistic Tip @ 2800 fps and it will have a point blank range of 320 yards on a 8" diameter target. At 400 yards it is ony 14" below point of aim.

The 300 magnum with a 290 yard zero using the same 180 grain bullet @ 3000 fps has a point blank range on the same 8" diameter target of 340 yards - a whopping 20 yard "advantage" over the old '06 BTW . At 400 yards it is 12" below point of aim, again scant advantage over the 30-06

most of what i have thats suitable for longer range shooting has either a ballistic plex, B&C or mil-dot reticle... although ive still got a long way to go before im proficient with the mil-dot.

Then you just shoot at various ranges and determine where your different cross hairs impact...

that was the .308 not the '06 -- and i was going off the top of my head since i was too lazy to start up a ballistics calc.
my .308s are zeroed at 200 yards. i guess a .30-06 zeroed at 250 would give close enough performance.

this i know - with common calibers like the .308s and .30-06s the graduations are usually very close.
id still be uncomfortable taking 400yd shots on game in difficult to follow/retrieve areas like mountains. just me though, im not hassling anyone using a .308 at those ranges.
then again i live in Ontario, we dont have to worry about that type of shot at all. still, i should really get some long rage practice JIC.

The 308 Winchester with the same 180 grain Ballistic tip launched at 2650 fps has an 8" diameter point blank range - not more than 4" above or below point of aim - of 300 yards and is about 19" low at 400 yards. This is starting to get to the point that one would have to hold over the back line to get into the vitals at ranges greater than 350 yards.

While this is the reason I personally don't consider the 308 a long range hunting round when used with a conventional hunting scope I don't see why an experienced shooter using a scope with target turrets or mil dot reticle could not do well out to 400 yards and beyond. As the 308 shooting the 180 BT, or similar high BC bullet, retains over 1000 ft/lbs of energy past 600 yards it's "killing ability" is not an issue.

Out of the guns that I personally own, I'd probably pack in my p-14 based 338. Neither particularly light nor compact, but manageable for me. But then, it's a custom. Come to think of it, though, none of my hunting rifles are off-the-shelf propositions. If I had to buy a new one expressly for the purpose, I'm not so sure. I've never really had much use for ultra-lightweights nor compacts, though I'm not exactly what you'd call 'average' height myself

I don't mind the blind magazine, it's a mountain rifle, and that saves at least a 1/4 pound. A floor plate does look good though. Then again if I was going for lookin' good, I'd by the ungraded Classic, not the Montana;)
