Hey all,

Well I just got my scope in the mail for my savage rimfire. I mounted it but there is space between the rings and the barrel of the gun. Is that normal or isn't it the whole ring suppost to be snug with the barrel or am I trying to mount the wrong size ring on my rimfire?

Thanks

cereal, I'm not sure if I follow you here...

There should be a dovetail groove on the receiver of your rifle, correct? And the proper rings should mate with that dovetail and lock in with a screw correct? As long as everything fits tight at the dovetail all is well... Or am I missing something here..

Ok I will try to make things clearer.

My rimfire rifle doesn't have normal bases that my 30-06 has. It has 2 little grooves.

I got a rimfire scope and the store said it would fit.

I loosened the bottem of the rings that has these twist knobs on them to loosen the bottem part of the ring to put in the grooves of the rimfire. I put it in place in the grooves and tightened the twist knobs. Now when I lift the gun to look down it (scope is mounted) if I looked under the scope between the bottem part of the rings that went into the little grooves, there is about a 1/2 cm gap between the barrel of the gun and the bottem of the ring except for the part that is in the grooves.

I am not sure if this is proper so I am asking.

Do you understand this time?

From what you have told us, I would say as long as everything is tight and you have proper fit and eye relief then everything is good. It is possible that you have too high rings. But I doubt that. What size space are we talking here and is it right under the scope and too the dovetail?

Ya I think I've got you now. The only thing that holds the rings tight to the rifle is the "dovetail" groove. There isn't contact with your rings anywhere else per se. You should be able to lift the rifle by grabbing the scope with no play. (Don't do this all the time though, just to check if you are tight).

But there's another thing that you should do as well. Providing everything seems tight and you're able to get the scope to adjust so that you're on your target, afterwards remove all screws, one by one, and dab a little "guntight" or "locktight" on the threads of the screws and reinstall. You can get guntight for like $10 for a little tube from a shooting place or use locktight from an automotive place for less money. But make sure you get the medium strength stuff if you us locktight. (Made to be removed after it sets, you'll end up stripping or breaking the little screws trying to remove one sealed with full strength locktight).:)

It sounds like the rail on the gun between the dovetails could be slightly arched and the rings you have have a flatish base creating the small space between the barrel and the bottom of the base. I know my Toz-78 is like that with the rings I have on it but they appear to be tight enough otherwise.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the replies. I am sure not on all the proper words but K98 seems to have it.

There is just a little gap from the barrel to the scope. Everything is tight and I bore sited it and it seems to be good and on there but I just wanted to make sure this was normal because on my 30-06, there is no gap anywhere.

I will try that locktight after I am sure it is installed properly. The gap is small like maybe 1/4 cm but I can see it.

I would take a pic but my camera is crap so I wouldn't be able to take a clear picture.

Thanks

I was just making sure it is installed properly. It seems to be on there good and I can run around with by holding the scope. Just looks kinda crappy.
