Mounties new pistol announced.

Currently if you include the RCMP announcement GLOCK has 90% of the Canadian police market, I haven’t seen an increase in ND’s from agencies that field them, when you follow the rule of removing the source of ammunition, clearing the firearm, and physical & visual inspection before disassembly.

Don’t underestimate Mounties.

Heck, I'm a decent shot with my 5946 and I have a sig at home with a red dot, and honestly I struggle with the optic. So many years of muscle memory it's hard to bring a pistol up just shy of where I'd normally go, and I'm hunting for a dot. I know I'll get used to it eventually, but it's a tough transition.
I've spent many years avoiding fancy pistol stuff so as not to screw up muscle memory and mechanics with my sidearm.

Oh that's super easy. Pulling the trigger to remove the slide. I foresee a lot of office pops.
I too have a 226 with a red dot. I am not near any level of proficiency to use in a high stress scenario. Plus when I shot with a tactical group, I used a Glock 17 with open sites. Grip angle is ofcourse different between the 2.
I used to RO at our local club. When RCMP would qualify every year, there were those who struggled badly. A fellow club member would take them under her wing to help them qualify. Hence my term under achiever.

It has the facade of modernizing. But Glocks have been around since 1980: plastic striker fired is over 4 decades old now. If this was beyond a facade of modernizing there would be something better, not just the same thing from 1980 with different lipstick. If selecting something that was designed less than 40yrs ago is "modernizing" and "better", the 2008 Chiappa Rhino is the future.

This doesn't change the fact that there are 100yo arms designs that are still in service because they are still the best, and really the only way forward in modernizing is probably the laser.

No. Similar to when the C8 was adapted. Technically a late 1960’s design. In reality, a $350 match Giselle trigger that offers riding the reset for one hole double taps, speed and accuracy. A red dot optic that again increases speed and accuracy. Plus a cold hammer firged barrel that offers superior accuracy and longevity.

The Glock 45 is essentially the updated Glock 19x in black. Gen 5, so the barrel actually shoots well ( thanks to the Walther ppq, accuracy is now expected). Glock 19 upper, g17 grip. Best of both worlds and no damn blood blister pinch from mag changes like the G19! Trigger is very good and like the carbine, you can now ride the reset. 👍. Both eyes open red dot. Excellent. Flashlight attached, no more old school FBI crap flashlight cross with pistol! 👍.

They chose well. Now it matches the carbine. Unfortunately it will likely take an inquiry before they adapt an AR10 with scope for overwatch. Something some detachment members utilized 20!years ago unofficially in busy more rural detachments.

I was among the first to be issued a new 5946 while in training. Hurl all the insults at me if you feel it necessary, but I liked it. Fit my hand nicely. Used to pee off one of my bosses when I would outdo him at qualifications. I would love to be able to buy one. I practiced with other like minded members, drawing, shooting right and left handed. If I was with a good auxiliary, we would practice, practice and more practice.
I did sort of feel sorry for those with girly-boy hands, but them’s the breaks.

Great choice for a replacement. No more Stainless steel and s#x appeal in the holster though.

I'm surprised the government didn't switch them to Nerf guns.

Nah, the government needs them well-armed for when, in the near future, they decide to use the RCMP against US.

And, sadly, many of the DEI hires from the last 10 years or so will happily just obey orders to do so...

In any case, G45's a good choice. 5946 was/is a decent gun, but I've always thought the trigger suuucked. Guess it's because I was always comparing it to the Glocks I usually took to the range with me.

And WHY do the Mounties need a new Pistol ? What is - was WRONG ? with the ones they are now carrying 🤷‍♂️
Some one give me some valid details Please !
What’s the cost $$ to us Taxpayers ?
The S&W 5946 came out in the early 1990 (36 years ago) and has been out of production since 1999! (27 years ago). They don't make parts for it anymore and there's no more support. It was chosen to replace the revolver and to assist in the transition they went with a DOA 8-12 lbs trigger. It has no modern features such as a rail for a weapon light or mounting options for a red dot. The 5.5 lbs trigger, light and red dot will make for more accurate shooters which is safer for everyone. Most municipal and provincial police forces have have upgraded there pistols 2-3 times since the RCMP started with the 5946.

Any word on the “plus” connector or the NY trigger kit? I can’t imagine they’ll let run-of-the-mill Mounties loose with a standard trigger. The CPS Glocks have a +10 lb trigger pull. Only the Tac team gets stock triggers.

I’m sure a heavier trigger will “aid” in the “transition”.

I haven't heard which trigger option they went with but the requirement for the contract was a min of 5.0 lbs, max of 7.0 lbs
