Mounting a new barrel

Hi !

I have read that nice sticky thread about changing barrel - well written !!! Anyway, I have some thoughts about my projekt.

I have a Norinco and have a GI-TRW bolt in it. It took some work to bolt lapp it to proper headspace but now it works fine (2-3000 rounds) and the rifle shoots well. I have the original barrel on the rifle.

I want this rifle to shoot real tight and have bought a Barnett heavy barrel to do the job. It is a old barrel from the 80:s, never used. I will receive it this or next week.
Plan to use a pull through reamer from Midway, also bought a barrel vise.

Do you think that I can use only that reamer to cut that unfinished chamber? Or do I need another reamer first? The rifle as it is now has a tight headspace and it just closes on the go-308w gauge.

I don´t have any other bolt or barrel to try either.

I´m a newbie about barrel works so I need all help I can get. I think this forum is the place. Many thanks in advance. :)

"...bolt lapping it to proper headspace..." Lapping has nothing to do with fitting for headspace. That's what the finishing reamer does.
"...bought a barrel vise..." Get the action wrench too? You'll also need the whole set of headspace guages to install another barrel.

Well, I have a chrome lined barrel already mounted from the factory - then bolt lapping must be the only way to get proper headspace if I change bolt, as I did before, or? But now I have a short chambered barrel, so the reamer is the only way to affect headspace? I´m gonna use that TRW bolt with the new barrel.

Please explain what you mean that bolt lapping is not...only the reamer, etc.

No I have not bought the action wrench, plan to use a huge crescent as shown in a book I have. I should work as well.

I have all 3 cauges for 308w and also the Nato field reject as a last security check for military ammo.

To clear things up...

- I have a receiver (norinco) with the original barrel.

- TRW bolt that I adjusted to the OLD barrel with bolt lapping, have been shooting a lot with that setup.

I want to...

- Mount a short chambered barrel and store the original barrel til other projects. I will use the TRW bolt with the new barrel.

Is a pull through reamer enough to cut that chamber if I take my time?

No need for another reamer: Chances are your new barrel is just (very) short-chambered and the pull-thru reamer is made just for that. I have used pull-thru reamers in both .308 and 30/06 in both M305's and Garands. Easy to use, just go slowly, use cutting fluid, clean chips and did I say go slowly? Reaming by hand of course (no power tools!)IMPORTANT: Make sure that your bolt is stripped and clean. Don't put excessive pressure on the bolt when closing during the reaming process. Depending on the size of the reamer, your bolt lug may not quite bottom-out after the chamber has been cut. Don't worry as long as it closes on the go gauge. This is a good thing.

Thanks a lot for your help. That was the answer I wanted. I just received my Barnett heavy barrel and it sure looks nice and is HEAVY - as I want it. :dancingbanana:
