Mounting a new mount

Need to level the receiver and then make sure the base of the mount is level relative to the receiver.

What is the best part of an m14 receiver to use to insure it is level both side to side and fore-aft?

Figure if I level the receiver, then level the base, everything will work out as both items will be level to each other.

Place a level (small size?) behind the rear sight aperture. You can/will locate a small flat spot at the tang of the rear of the receiver... You will notice that the rear vernier (scale) of the rear sight is compared (for lack of a better verb) against the receiver markings/hash lines. Place your level there! That's where I always clamp my parallel 'flats' for indexing receivers/barrels combinations.
