Mounting a scope (Torque Driver)

Hi Guys,

I am considering mounting a scope on my m305 and noticed that a specific Inch/lb amount is given for the mounting of the precision rings that I have. I previously mounted the scope on a Keltec RFB and had some zeroing the rifle. I sent the scope and mounts for warranty and was told by the company that the scope and mounts that I had previously over tightened a mounts. They recommended that I tighten the mount to a specific inch-pounds. The only way I know to get this would be to get a Torque driver. So far I have only found the Wheeler FAT wrench, which I hear from reviews isn't very accurate. The ones that are I can only seem to find in the 100 dollar price range. Do any of you have any recommendations or do I need to bite the bullet and put down the cash for a good torque screwdriver and use it for future scope mounting use as well.

sorry to resurrect the thread, but what would be a good range for the screwdriver? I was hoping to use it for scope mounts mostly (not sure what else in the firearms world could be used for?).
 
I have one and use it to torque all the fasteners on my firearms. I have a tendency to over torque things and this keeps me out of trouble. Touch wood, but nothing I've used it on has stripped, broken or come loose.
 
I havent heard too many good things online from the Wheeler FAT torque wrench otherwise that would have been my first choice
 
Borka makes a really good torque driver set. I believe they ship to Canada for a reasonable shipping price (Correction - see below), though I've never had one shipped to Canada, so I can't confirm that. My Borka kit currently resides in Texas, but like you I'm looking at getting a torque driver in Canada and it's on the short list.

*Edit - Borka doesn't ship to Canada. It's a shame because its a great kit, I haven't seen anything that rivals it in Canada.

Lordco had a Jet kit on their counter that was special ordered.
Looked like a decent screwdriver styled torque driver.
Price was over a hundred bucks though.
 
I've got the Wheeler FAT wrench, works great and never had an issue with it. Mine came in a set with lapping tools and a few bits. If I mounted more than 1 or 2 scopes a year, I might consider upgrading, but for my needs it works perfectly.
 
Been using the Fat Wrench for almost 10 years and have never damage a scope nor have any ring screws come loose on me. I have mounted a few scopes of my own and for some friends. I find it very easy to control bc of it's size and weight. With the lighter, smaller grips on some of the wrenches, they have more tendency to slip off resulting in damage the screw head and possibly scratch the scope or the gun. Great value.

I've had to find an accurate torque driver for work and after much research I got the WIHA Torque Driver, its not the cheapest out there but it's very well built and comes with an ISO calibration certificate.

I second this, it's very good quality and covers the right range. Moreover, WIHA makes arguably the best screwdrivers in the world.
 
fat works. I bought the 1 inch / 30mm mounting kit with lapping rods, etc. comes with the wrench. it works. doesnt strip, doesnt come loose.
 
We sell lots of Wheeler Fat Wrenches and have never had a return for problems. We use them every day in the shop and believe me that we mount hundreds of scopes a year without problems. Yes this is a consumer use kit and wouldn't qualify for high end use like a machime shop . I feel way better using the Fat Wrench than just guessing on the torque and have yet to damage a scope. Phil.
