As the title states is mounting bayonets on a shotgun legal? I know some rifles come with their own bayonets. In the case of the Winchester 1897 It can utilize a bayonet. But what if the shotgun (an 870) never was designed to use one? Would it be legal for me to pay a gunsmith to drill the mounts to attach a bayonet lug to it?

I'm seriously asking even if it sounds weird. Thanks ahead of time.

It's legal to mount a bayonet on a bayonet. Double bayonet.

Bayonets are not controlled unless they also happen to be one of the prohibited knife types(switchblade, butterfly knife, gravity opening, push dagger, etc)

"...drill the mounts..." That's not how it's done, but legal just the same. Mossberg used to sell a Model 500 with an 8 round tube mag that took an M-16 bayonet. Friggin' things sold like hot cakes in the shop I worked in Long ago. Putting a bayonet on a shotgun is a daft thing, but fun.

Well not entirely, if you are out hunting it could be useful in the event an animal charges at you, gives you ability to stick them an get another shot or few off. We all know some critters when you shoot them don't drop dead and come bolting at you pissed off.

"...Well not entirely..." If any animal is big enough to charge you after you could'nt kill it with one shot from a 12 guage, having a bayonet mounted isn't going to help.
"...Winchester 1897 It(SIC) can utilize a bayonet..." That it can. A Win 97 with a bayonet recently sold on liveauctionworld.com/ for $2750US. It used an M1917 bayonet with a 17" blade. Same bayonet used on a 1903 Springfield rifle. That bayonet alone runs nearly $200US, Stateside.
