Mounting Difficulties (cont.)

You use an aluminum rod of the correct diameter with a fine abrasive compound. Mount the rings on the base with the lapping rod in place of the scope. Do not snug the top caps down. Run the lapping rod back and forth, rotating it; the abrasive will cut down the high spots in the rings, so that the rings can hold the scope with even pressure, without marking it. Overdo it, and the rings can't hold the scope properly.
You have not damaged your scope. The finish may be slightly marked, but this is entirely non-functional, purely cosmtic. Sometimes you see ring bites which really groove the scope.
Guntech is a superior, experienced gunsmith, highly recommended.

Thanks! Oh ok, I might send them to him then. I'd rather have an experienced smith do it than attempt it myself. And thanks for the clarification, that's a big relief.

Sorry about that, I was exactly clear on what lapping is. Depending on the cost, lapping sounds like a good idea. How much does it cost to get this kind of thing done?

guntech: If you don't mind me asking, are you a smith? And if so, would you be able to lap my rings for me? How much do you charge (if you have that service).

-Rohann

To lap rings and mount the scope and boresight is usually $30. I will be away Wednesday for 5 days.

You need the rifle and mounts to lap rings...

Oh ok, thanks. That's not a problem; I'll see how soon I can get down to Victoria.

Best way to assemble or lap and assemble is with the proper tools. When I mount a $2000 scope I always use torque wrench / torque screwdiver to assemble. This is where I thank my friend the Snap-On guy!

Rohann, my recommendation is if your not set up to handle this to seek a compitent gunsmith how can assist in getting you back up and running.

You don't want to learn hard lessons re-assembling expensive components wrong. If your unsure, seek assistance!

I would, as indicated above, get the rings lapped.

Guntech/Dennis is a damn good smith, trust him. Get on your bike and pedal your arse to Brentwood bay.
Isn't Brentwood Bay in Victoria? If that's the case then I can probably get a ride down there :).

Blackcloud: I definately won't take that risk with this; I'll see if I can get down to Brentwood Bay sometime soon and get this done properly.

On a side note, would you possibly be able to mount the scope as well?
