I am mounting a new leupold 3x9x50 scope on a ruger ( I think it is a m77 not sure). The bases are a part of the action. I have leupold rings they fit on the bases no problem scope fits on gun great. But the eye relief is off a bit. The scope needs to be slid back about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch to make eye relief excellent. The old redfield has a long tube which fit fine good eye relief. The Leopold has a shorter tube so the scope has no room to be pulled back and fix the relief. If anyone has any suggestions it would be great. Please note I am not an expert. Thanks

The ring spread is to great. The front ring and the taper of the scope are near touching. The turrets and the rear ring have approx 1". I am not in front of gun right now. So the old scope was longer and a lot smaller redicle so the taper wasn't as great either. Is this a common issue with older rifles and bases and then installing new scopes? Is there an off set ring that would be suitable? Or do I have to find a different scope?

You could use a picatinny rail specifically for those Ruger scope mounts and you would have a little more flexibility in pulling your scope back a bit.
I use G&G pic rails on my Mini 14 and 30 and would not have it any other way! Wolverine Supply has the G&G rails and a great assortment of rings as well!

Leupold makes offset ring mounts for Ruger rifles.

This. An extension ring is a much better solution than adding a Picatinny rail. The Ruger integral bases are among the strongest, if not the strongest, in the industry. I see no reason to weaken them.

It's odd that the eye relief is that off. But everyone's body is different.
