Mounting problems with old swede rifle

I got a 6.5x55 Husky from my father in law. It had an old scope mounted on it so I decided to put on a newer one.

When trying to bore sight it, I realized that the mounts aren't even. He's got Weaver bases and detatchable top mounts. The bases are different hights (I guess to compensate for the offset between the front and the rear of the reciever).

Anyways, I couldn't bore site it in, I was still 2" left of centre and I ran out of clicks (tried two different scopes). The scope he had on there can just barely get sighted in, another 1/4" and it'd max out. I used a level to see the differences between the front and rear base and the front was level but the rear was on an angle. I used my grinder to file away one side of the rear base, and it helped, but its obviously not the proper solution. And even then, the front base still sits about 1/8" higher than the rear.

I'm not sure what to do with it. I looked at those Leupold 1 piece mounts and they look like they make even things out?

Any suggestions on this one guys?

Well - You can ort out the windage issue by using Millett rings - which are adjustable. The elevation issue is another story - are you sure the bases are at different heights relative to the bore? I think you need to do a bit more investigation here. If needed, one base can be shimmed ...

Milletts will give you lateral adjustment, Burris Zees with inserts can give windage and/or elevation.
Got a good straight edge? Check to see how the bases line up. A 3' straight edge can be really eye opening.

When I put a level accross it and had it sit flat/flush on the front base, the rear base is 1/8" lower. I'm assuming that when the scope is on and tightened down, that's probably putting stress on the scope since the bases aren't flush. And as stated, the rear one is not only sitting lower, but tilted a bit.

I'm headed to the gun shop soon to see what they can do. I'll ask them about the Millett and Burris rings as you guys suggested. Thanks.

Sounds to me like you have the bases reversed front to back or some silly thing like that - is that possible and the holes still line up? / perhaps 98 Mauser mounts on a 96. I don't have a 96 but are both bridges the same height on those? Do a good autopsy (who knows what the old boy did) and if you hit the wall start over - bases and rings aren't that costly. --- John S

The coorect Weaver bases are #55 and #46. What are the numbers of the bases on the rifle?

Ted

Almost guaranteed that this info will solve your problem. Sounds like you've just got the wrong bases. I own a couple of these rifles and they didn't need anything done to the bases or wierd rings or anything. Just installed the proper bases and done.
