I hope someone can help me with this vexing problem.

I mounted a Vortex 3.5-10 scope on my Ruger M77. I noted that the 50mm objective bell just barely contacted the barrel. I was going to remove the scope but my cheap allen wrench snapped off in one of the ring screws. I will have to take it to a gunsmith to drill out the screw if I want to remove the scope.

My question is: should I shoot the rifle with the objective bell touching the barrel to see if it works? I am concerned that doing so might damage the scope.

When in doubt read the instructions. Do the Vortex instructions give any advice on what to avoid in mounting their optics ?
For your future reference , the barrel vibrates when the gun fires. Do you think the high frequency barrel vibration would be healthy for the scope ?
The cap screws on the rings are typically tightened to about 25-35 inch/lbs. If you're breaking wrenches even with the lightest duty tools you may want exercise restraint in overtightening those acrews.
 
Not offering any advice here but....
I have a Japanese Tasco 3X9X40 which has been mounted on a Tikka 30.06 for at least 10 years. The bell of the objective is tight to the barrel. I have shot at least 500 rounds through this gun and it is very accurate.
Several people have told me that it will wreck the scope but I keep shooting it and it keeps working!

Did you use a collimator or bore sight your scope when you mounted it and did you level your rifle and true up the X hairs ? From your post its hard to understand your situation. I'm guessing that if this is a first attempt at scope mounting you may be best advised to take your M77 to a gunsmith as further adjustments may be required and it sounds as though you're two-blocked. If you have warranty issues with your Vortex, evidence the scope has been improperly mounted and used may affect your warranty,, again, I'm guessing. Warranty claims with Vortex scopes are not unheard of.

Wha? The op mounted his scope in rings that are to low and he obj bell is on his barrel , then he snapped off his Allen key in one of the ring screws ....
 
There should be some clearance between the barrel and the scope. The barrel heats and expands and you don't want pressure on the scope. Go to the next highest rings would be what I would do.

I read a lot on the Internet about this. Everyone seems to think that the scope must not touch the barrel. The heat and vibration will allegedly ruin the scope.

Yet you are the only person who has tried it and there have been no negative consequences to date, after 500 rounds. Maybe your scope will shatter into pieces after 501 rounds of ammo. Who knows? I am tempted to give it a try and see what happens. My rifle is a 257 Roberts, so I guess the vibration and heat will be significantly less than your rifle generates.

And for those who wonder at my incompetence, it is the second or maybe third scope I mounted myself. I have always given my guns to gunsmiths or knowledgeable friends to do it for me. It seems I should have done so again. To quote from Clint, “A man has got to know his limitations.”

There is touching and not touching.
What the heck is barely touching?
Can you see day light under the bell?
Will a sliver of paper slide between the barrel and bell?
Can three sheets of paper slide under there?

As far as the broken key in the bolt head, surely it can't be that difficult to
get out?

Give a monkey a banana and watch him eat the skin................aye?

No paper can slide between the scope and barrel. I would guess that a shim the thickness of a credit card within the rings would give it clearance of the barrel. It is too bad that the rings are not just a bit higher. The way it fits now, as far as the cheek weld goes, is just about ideal.
 
One of my concerns would be if the scope bell is touching or being forced upwards by the barrel it would put undue stress on the scope tube and glass inside. For what it costs I'd take it to a smith and have the broken screw removed and correct rings installed.
 
Yes paper can slip through? Or no, paper can not slip through between bell and barrel? which one?

If paper can not slip under the bell, then I would suggest moving the scope slightly forward until it clears. Can you loosen all ring screws except the one that has the broken allen piece? If so, this may get it loose enough for you to slide to scope forward with a little upward lift on the ring. Try that out.
